Extra Bed and Child Policies in Vietnam Hotels

Travelling with children and unsure what the hotel will charge for a bed or breakfast.

Child policies in Vietnam hotels are set by each property, so there is no standard age or fee. Look at three separate charges: the bed, the stay itself and breakfast. Then get the answers in writing before you pay.

Why do the rules vary so much?

Each hotel decides its own age cut-offs, its bed fees and its breakfast rules. A baby may stay free in a cot at one hotel and count as a guest at another. Booking sites summarise this in a line or two, and the detail can be thin.

That is why two hotels at a similar price can end up with different totals once a family checks in.

What are the three charges to check?

  • The bed: a cot or extra bed may be free, or charged per night.
  • The stay: some hotels let young children stay free in existing beds.
  • Breakfast: a child may eat free, pay by age band or pay as an adult.

Check each one on its own. An included breakfast for two does not always extend to a third or fourth guest.

What should you ask the hotel?

Send a message at booking that names the ages. You can copy this:

We are two adults and (number) children aged (ages), staying (dates). Please confirm the extra bed or cot, its cost per night, and the breakfast charge for each child. Please reply with the total for our room.

Ask in writing, and keep a screenshot. If the answer differs from the booking page, ask which one applies.

Does the room set-up change the answer?

Yes. A family room may already hold extra beds, while a standard double room with a foldaway squeezes the space. See family room or connecting rooms for the trade-offs.

Room names also hide limits on the number of people a room can hold. Our room types explained page shows how to read them.

How does this affect your budget?

Extra bed and breakfast fees add up across a week. Put them into the trip budget builder so the nightly total reflects the whole family. If a hotel’s rules feel complicated, a serviced apartment may count guests differently.

Common questions

At what age do children stay free in Vietnam hotels?

There is no single rule. Each hotel sets its own age cut-off for free stays, and it can differ between a baby, a toddler and an older child. Read the child policy on the booking page, then confirm the exact ages with the hotel in writing.

Is an extra bed always charged?

Not always, but plan for it. Some hotels include a cot for a baby, while an extra bed for an older child or adult is usually charged per night. The fee can differ between hotels, so ask what the bed is and what it costs.

Does a child have to pay for breakfast?

It depends on the hotel. Some let young children eat free with paying adults, others charge by age bands, and some count every guest equally. Ask what applies to each child, and check whether the room rate already covers breakfast for two.

How do I avoid surprises at check-in?

Tell the hotel at booking the number of adults and children coming and their ages. Ask for the extra bed and the total in writing. Screenshot the reply and keep it on your phone, so the front desk can see what was agreed.
