Ha Giang or Sapa: Which Northern Mountain Trip
Two mountain trips from Hanoi ask very different things of your body and your leave days.
Choose Sapa if you want comfort, a town base and one clear transfer from Hanoi. Choose Ha Giang if you want remote mountain roads and can accept long days and simpler stays. For a first trip or a group with older relatives, Sapa is the easier answer.
Which mountain trip suits which traveller?
- First-timers, short leave, families: Sapa.
- Photographers who want solitude and open roads: Ha Giang.
- Travellers with knee or back concerns: Sapa, with fewer long road days.
- Return visitors seeking something less visited: Ha Giang.
How do the two compare?
| Question | Sapa | Ha Giang |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Mountain town with hotels | Small towns, simpler stays |
| Effort | One long transfer from Hanoi | Multi-day road journey |
| Comfort | Higher | Lower |
| Scenery | Terraced valleys, mist, peaks | Limestone mountains, winding roads |
| Best for | First-timers, families, photographers who like rest | Return visitors, adventurous photographers |
How far is each from Hanoi?
Sa Pa is approximately 300 km northwest of Hanoi in Lao Cai province1. The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km2, which gives you a rail option before the final road leg.
Ha Giang is farther into the mountains, so plan several days and most of a day for the first road transfer. Both start from Hanoi, which has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air3.
What is the weather like?
Northern Vietnam has four seasons, unlike the centre and south4. Sapa’s annual mean temperature is 15.3 C, with January averaging 8.7 C and July averaging 19.9 C5. Its record low is minus 6.1 C, and snowfall can occur6.
Sapa gets 2,000 to 2,500 mm of rain a year, mostly April to September7. Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest peak, is 3,147.3 m high8, so views from the top depend on cloud. Pack layers and rain gear.
What should you check before choosing?
- How many days you can give the north, counting the transfers.
- Your travel month against the cold and rain above.
- Whether anyone in your group dislikes long road days.
- Whether you want to ride yourself or travel with a driver.

Common questions
Which is easier for a first-time visitor?
Sapa is easier. It has a town with hotels, restaurants and clear day walks, and the trip from Hanoi is a single transfer. Ha Giang is a multi-day road journey through steep mountain passes, with simpler stays and long days in a vehicle. First-timers who want comfort will usually prefer Sapa.
Which is better for photographers?
Both reward photographers. Sapa gives terraced valleys and mist near a town where you can rest between shoots. Ha Giang gives wide limestone vistas and winding roads, but you spend long days getting to each spot. Choose Sapa for comfort and Ha Giang if you will accept effort for solitude.
How cold does Sapa get?
Sapa's annual mean temperature is 15.3 C. January averages 8.7 C and July averages 19.9 C. Its record low is minus 6.1 C and snowfall can occur. Pack warm layers if you travel in winter, even if Hanoi feels mild. Rain falls mostly from April to September.
Do I have to ride a motorbike in Ha Giang?
No. Many visitors ride the loop, but you can also travel by car with a driver or join a group. If you do not ride confidently, choose a driver. Our guide to Ha Giang without a motorbike sets out your options in plain terms.
Can I do both in one trip?
Not comfortably in a short trip. Each needs several days plus travel from Hanoi, and the two are in different directions. Pick one for a week or less, and keep the other for a return visit. If you have time for both, build in a rest day in Hanoi.
