Where to Stay in Hanoi: Three Areas Compared

Choose the Hanoi neighbourhood that matches how you sleep, walk and arrive.

For a first trip, stay in the Old Quarter if you want to walk to everything and can manage some night noise. Choose the French Quarter for wider streets and a calmer night, and West Lake if quiet matters more than walking. The choice decides your sleep and your transfers, so make it before you compare hotels.

Which Hanoi area matches your trip?

  • First trip, short leave, love walking: Old Quarter.
  • Light sleeper or travelling with grandparents: French Quarter.
  • Shopping and street food: Old Quarter.
  • Quiet, cafes and lakeside, and fine with Grab: West Lake.
  • Young children: French Quarter, with an upper-floor room.

What is the Old Quarter like to sleep in?

It is the Hanoi most people picture: narrow streets, trade lanes and motorbikes. You can walk from your hotel to food stalls, markets and the lake. Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street was built between 1885 and 1890 and holds about 200 people3, so Muslim travellers also have an anchor nearby.

The cost is noise, which varies street by street. Read avoiding a noisy Old Quarter room before you book, and see Hanoi Old Quarter: is it the right place to stay for the wider picture.

Why choose the French Quarter?

It sits just south-east of the Old Quarter, with wider streets, older villas and a calmer feel. You can still walk to the lake and into the Old Quarter. It suits grandparents and light sleepers who want to wake up rested and still step out on foot.

When does West Lake make sense?

West Lake is a residential district with lakeside cafes and quiet evenings. It works for slow stays and couples who do not mind a short Grab ride to most sights. Late at night the streets are quiet, so return by Grab rather than on foot.

What about the airport transfer?

Noi Bai is about 35 km north-east of downtown Hanoi1. Public bus 86 links the terminals with the Old Quarter and Hanoi Railway Station, listed at 45,000 VND when we checked2. Confirm the fare before you go.

A pre-booked car or Grab is easier with luggage, children or elders. Allow extra time at peak hours, since town traffic is slow.

For flights from Kuala Lumpur, read KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.

What should you check before booking?

  • The room’s floor and whether it faces the street.
  • The distance to the lake, on a map you trust.
  • The airport pickup arrangement, in writing.
  • Whether the hotel stores bags if you leave for a night trip.

Common questions

Which Hanoi area is best for a first-time visitor?

The Old Quarter suits a first trip because you can walk to food, markets and the lake. Its drawback is night noise. The French Quarter is the calmer choice if you still want to walk. Pick West Lake only if you prefer quiet and are happy to take a Grab for every outing.

Is the Old Quarter too noisy to sleep?

It can be, on streets with late bars and motorbikes. Noise depends on the street and the floor more than the area. Ask for a room at the back or on an upper floor, and ask the hotel about night noise before you book. Our noisy room guide explains how.

How do I get from Noi Bai airport to each area?

Noi Bai is about 35 km north-east of downtown, so you need a car, a Grab or a bus. The Old Quarter and French Quarter share the same direction into town. West Lake is on the airport side of the city, so the transfer is simpler. Confirm the pickup price with your hotel before you arrive.

Is Hanoi safe to walk at night?

Central areas are busy in the evening, and walking is normal. Take normal care: keep your phone and bag on the side away from the road, and cross streets slowly. West Lake gets quiet late, so a Grab back to the hotel is more comfortable than a long walk.

Should I stay in one area for the whole trip?

For a short trip, yes. Changing hotels costs half a day. If you add a night in Ninh Binh or a bay, keep a Hanoi base and store your large bag. Our slow travel guide shows how few bases a trip of your length needs.
