Hanoi to Da Nang: Flight or Train

Short leave and a long country: choose the leg that costs you the fewest holiday hours.

On short leave, fly from Hanoi to Da Nang. The flight is short and the train takes a night or most of a day. Choose the train only if you want the ride itself, or if a sleeper berth saves you a hotel night.

Which option suits which traveller?

  • Short leave or first trip: fly. Every hour you save is an hour in Hoi An or on the beach.
  • Elderly parents or toddlers: fly. Fewer changes, and a bed or seat that does not rock.
  • Budget couples with spare days: compare both. A sleeper berth can replace one hotel night.
  • Train lovers and photographers: take the train, and read about the scenic stretches of the north-south line first.

How do they compare door to door?

Door-to-door time counts the trip to the airport or station, waiting, the journey and the transfer at the end. That is where the real gap shows.

Noi Bai is about 35 km from downtown Hanoi1, so allow time to get there. Da Nang’s airport has the code DAD2. Check your baggage allowance in our domestic flight baggage guide before you buy a low-cost fare.

What should you know about the train?

Da Nang sits on the North-South line, which runs 1,726 km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City3. The full run takes about 30 hours end to end4. Hanoi to Da Nang covers only part of it, but it is still a long ride.

Tickets go on sale through Vietnam Railways’ official booking site, dsvn.vn5. Our train booking and classes guide explains seat and berth types in plain terms.

What should you check before you choose?

  • Your arrival and departure times, so you do not land at midnight with a hotel check-in in the morning.
  • Whether a sleeper really replaces a hotel night, or whether you need the room anyway.
  • Baggage rules on the flight you are looking at, and how you will handle bags on the train.
  • Buffer time if this flight connects to an international one. See domestic flight connections and buffer time.

Common questions

Is the train or the flight better for Hanoi to Da Nang on short leave?

Fly. A short domestic flight leaves most of your leave for sightseeing, while the train takes a night or most of a day. The train only makes sense if you want the ride itself, or if a sleeper berth replaces a hotel night in your plan.

Is the train cheaper than the flight?

Not always. Early flight sales can undercut a soft sleeper berth, while a flexible fare close to departure can cost more. Prices change by season and by how early you buy, so compare both on the same dates in the budget builder before deciding.

Can I take big suitcases on the train?

Yes, but you carry them yourself. Corridors and steps are narrow, and there is no porter service to count on. If you travel with a stroller or older parents, a flight with checked baggage is usually the calmer choice.

Should I book the train ahead?

Yes, particularly for sleeper berths in busy weeks such as school holidays and Tet. Use the official channel or a booking agent you can verify, and confirm the date, train number and berth type before you pay.

Is the Da Nang airport far from the city?

No. Da Nang's airport sits close to the city centre, so a taxi or Grab ride to your hotel is short. That is a big part of why the flight wins on door-to-door time.
