Where to Stay in Hue: Citadel or Riverside

Pick the Hue bank that fits how much you want to walk to the palace and to dinner.

Stay on the Perfume River side if you want restaurants, cafes and an easy evening on foot. Stay on the Citadel side if you want a quieter street and a short walk to the Imperial City gate. For a short visit, the river side is the simpler pick for most first-timers.

Which bank suits which traveller?

  • First visit, one or two nights: river side.
  • Early Imperial City entry, quiet sleepers: Citadel side.
  • Grandparents or small children: the side closest to your plan, with a short Grab for the other.
  • Food and evenings out: river side.

What does the Citadel side offer?

It sits inside and beside the old walls, with wide streets and a calm feel. Hue Imperial City is part of the Complex of Hue Monuments, inscribed by UNESCO in 19931. From a Citadel-side hotel you can reach the gate without a ride.

The trade-off is fewer restaurants after dark, so you may need a short Grab for dinner.

What does the river side offer?

The south bank of the Perfume River is where most hotels, cafes and restaurants gather. Your evening is easy: walk along the river, then eat nearby. The Imperial City is a short Grab ride away, or a morning walk across the bridge.

This is the side we suggest for a short first stay, because it makes the evening simple and keeps the palace within reach.

What should you plan for the Imperial City?

The adult ticket for the Imperial City was listed at 200,000 VND when we checked, with children aged 7 to 12 at 40,000 VND and under-7s free2. Hours were listed as 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM in the dry season and 7 AM to 5 PM in the rainy season3. Confirm both before you go.

Go early, before the heat, and plan a break in the afternoon. A tomb or pagoda visit fits a second day better than the same morning.

How do you reach Hue from Malaysia?

Hue has no direct international flights. Da Nang, the nearest international airport, is 80 km south of Phu Bai4. You fly to Da Nang and continue by road, which takes part of a day. Read Hue as a day trip or overnight stop before you decide how many nights to give it.

Common questions

Which side of Hue is better for a short stay?

The river side suits a short stay because restaurants, cafes and the walking street are close together and you can step out at night. The Citadel side is quieter and closer to the palace gate. Choose it if sightseeing at opening time matters more than evening choice.

Can I walk from the river side to the Imperial City?

Yes, across a bridge, but the heat makes it a long walk in the middle of the day. Walk across in the morning and take a Grab back. If you have grandparents or small children, a short ride each way is kinder than the walk.

Is one night in Hue enough?

One night suits a visit built around the Imperial City and a riverside dinner. Two nights allow a slower pace and a tomb or pagoda visit. Hue's airport has no international routes, so you reach it by road from Da Nang, which uses up part of a day.

Should we stay in Hue or visit from Da Nang?

Staying gives you early entry and a calm evening by the river, and removes a long road leg. A day trip from Da Nang saves a hotel change but costs time on the road. Our day trip or overnight guide helps you choose.
