What does the weather do to each?

Northern Vietnam has four seasons1. Hanoi’s coolest month is January, at a mean of 16.4 C2, and the mountains are usually cooler than the capital. Pack layers if you travel in the cooler months.

Rain turns the paths muddy and can hide the view. The terraces look different from month to month, so ask the homestay about your dates before you pay a deposit. Our weather by month guide shows the seasonal picture for the north.

How should you plan the stay?

Plan two nights, so the road does not take most of your break. Arrive in daylight, walk a short loop, eat the homestay meal and rest. The next day, take a longer walk or a bicycle ride and return before dark.

Book a driver or an arranged pickup from Hanoi rather than a late public connection. If you have luggage, ask the homestay how close a car can reach.

What should you check before you book?

  • Whether the room has a private bathroom and hot water.
  • How meals work, and whether alternatives exist if you do not eat what is served.
  • How close a car can get, and whether staff help with bags.
  • What else is nearby if the weather turns.

See Homestay or hotel in mountain towns for what to expect in each. If you cannot decide between short breaks, compare Mai Chau or Moc Chau. For more terrace regions, see Where to see rice terraces in Vietnam, and for more on bases, the Cities and where to stay hub.

Common questions

Which is easier to reach from Hanoi?

Mai Chau is the easier of the two for most plans, with a more established stay scene and simpler logistics. Pu Luong asks for a longer road and a more rural arrival. Ask any operator for the exact road time for your chosen homestay, because it varies with the pickup point.

Which has better rice-terrace views?

Both have terraces, and the view depends on the month more than the place. Ask the homestay what the fields look like during your dates before you book. Pu Luong feels wilder and more remote, while Mai Chau is gentler and easier to walk around.

Is Pu Luong too basic for a comfort-minded couple?

It can be. Some Pu Luong stays are eco-style and simple, with fewer facilities and quieter evenings. If you want a firm bed, hot water and a menu with choices, check each property closely or choose Mai Chau, where there is more to compare.

How many nights do I need?

Two nights is a good minimum for either, so the long road does not swallow the break. One night is possible for Mai Chau if you leave early. Pu Luong rewards a third night, because the pace is slow and the main joy is walking and resting.
