Before you book

Passport Validity and Condition Before You Book

Checking every family passport before paying for flights saves a very bad day at the airport.

Check every passport in your group before you pay for a single ticket. Compare the expiry date with the official guidance for Vietnam, look at the condition of the pages and match the names to your booking. Two minutes at the kitchen table can save a bad day at check-in.

How long must your passport be valid?

At the time we checked, one tourism source said a Malaysian passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival in Vietnam1. Vietnam Airlines states that passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the planned stay2.

The two wordings are not identical, so use the stricter one and confirm with your airline. Count from your arrival date, not from the day you book. If you land in March, your passport should run well past September. Our guide to checking entry rules from official sources shows how to confirm this yourself.

What should you compare?

Use this list for each traveller, including babies.

  • Expiry date: is there a clear margin after your return date?
  • Condition: are the pages intact, the photo clear and the laminate flat?
  • Names: do the booking names match the photo page exactly?
  • Signature or details: is anything faded, altered or unreadable?
  • Child details: does the child’s passport have its own date, not the parents’?

What if there is a problem?

Fix it before you book, not after. If the passport is near expiry, renew it and book once the new one arrives. If a page looks damaged, ask the airline in writing whether it will be accepted, and keep their reply.

Do not rely on a travel agent or a friend to confirm validity. The airline and the Vietnamese authorities decide whether you board and enter, so ask them.

Who can you ask to verify?

Ask your airline’s customer service, using the contact details on its official website. For rules about entry, use the Vietnamese official channels. For Malaysian passport matters, use the Malaysian official channels. Write down the date, the answer and the name of the person who gave it.

What to do next

Once every passport is confirmed, move on to the other pre-departure items. Read the travel insurance questions, then our money and SIM guide. Lay out your dates in the travel-day checker. The Flying from Malaysia hub has more.

Common questions

How long should my passport be valid for Vietnam?

The sources we checked say at least six months, but rules can change, so confirm with the official channels and your airline. Count from your arrival date, not from the day you book. If the margin is thin, renew first and book afterwards.

What counts as a damaged passport?

Torn or loose pages, water damage, a peeling photo laminate, unreadable details and anything that looks altered can cause trouble at check-in. If you are unsure, ask the airline before you pay for flights. A clean, intact passport avoids needless questions.

Do children need their own passport?

Yes, each traveller needs their own passport, including babies. Check the child's expiry date and photo separately from the parents. Children's passports can expire sooner, so do not assume the family's dates match.

What if my passport is about to expire?

Renew it before you book, and wait for the new one to arrive. Do not pay for non-refundable items and hope to renew in time. Check the current renewal process on the official Malaysian immigration channels.

Should the name on my ticket match my passport exactly?

Yes. Type the name exactly as it appears on the photo page, in the same order, and without nicknames. A mismatch can mean a change fee or a refused boarding. Fix any error as soon as you notice it.
