Beach bases

Phu Quoc, Nha Trang or Da Nang: Which Beach

Three beach bases, one set of school or leave dates: find the one that suits your group.

If you want one beach base with the least effort, pick Da Nang. If you want a resort island and quiet evenings, pick Phu Quoc. If you want a beach city with boat trips to the bay islands, pick Nha Trang. Your travel month can settle it before anything else does.

Which beach suits which group?

Start with your own situation.

  • Short leave, toddlers or grandparents: Da Nang. One city holds the beach, food and sightseeing.
  • Couples who want rest: Phu Quoc. Resort days, sunsets and little to organise.
  • Budget couples who like choice: Nha Trang. City beach, plenty of eating options and island boat trips.
  • Sightseeing between beach days: Da Nang, with Hoi An nearby.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

All three are reachable on direct flights. Phu Quoc is listed with AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways to Kuala Lumpur International1. Cam Ranh, the Nha Trang airport, lists AirAsia as its only Malaysian airline2. Da Nang lists AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air3.

Nha Trang is 30 km from the airport4, so allow a road transfer on arrival day. Phu Quoc covers 575 km28, so your resort location matters more than on a city beach.

When is each beach at its best?

Phu Quoc has a rainy season roughly from April to November and a dry season roughly from December to March5. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December and its dry season as January to August6.

That makes a mid-year holiday easier at Da Nang and a year-end holiday easier at Phu Quoc. Our weather by month guide shows each month side by side.

What else is within reach?

Da Nang gives you the most. Hoi An lies about 28 km south7, and our Da Nang city guide lists the other half-day options. For Nha Trang, see the Nha Trang stay areas. For the island, read the Phu Quoc profile.

What should you check before choosing?

  • Your travel month against the rainy windows above.
  • Your airline options for the dates you can take.
  • How much sightseeing you want between beach days.
  • Whether a road or boat transfer suits the youngest and oldest in your group.

Common questions

Which beach is easiest to reach from Kuala Lumpur?

All three have direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, so none needs a connection through Ho Chi Minh City. Da Nang lists four airlines, Phu Quoc lists AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways, and Nha Trang lists only AirAsia. More choice of airline means easier date changes, so check schedules for your own dates.

Which is best for toddlers and grandparents?

Da Nang usually asks least of the group, because the beach, restaurants and sightseeing sit in one city and the transfers are short. Phu Quoc suits families who want a resort pool and calm days. Nha Trang works too, but the airport is a drive from the city, so plan the arrival day gently.

Which beach has the best evenings?

Nha Trang and Da Nang are city beaches, so dinner, cafes and night walks are outside your hotel door. Phu Quoc nights are quieter and more spread out, built around the resort, the night market and sunset spots. Pick the island if you want rest, and a city beach if you want choice.

Can I combine a beach with some culture?

Da Nang is the strongest here, with Hoi An close by and Hue a longer day trip. Nha Trang adds boat trips to the bay islands. Phu Quoc is mostly a pure beach stay, with a pepper farm, fish sauce visit or two to break up the days. Choose by how much sightseeing you really want.

Does the travel month decide the winner?

Yes, for most dates. Phu Quoc is rainy roughly April to November and dry roughly December to March, while Da Nang has a wet and typhoon season from September to December. A mid-year school holiday points to Da Nang, and a year-end holiday points to Phu Quoc. Check your month before you fix flights.
