Short leave

A Malaysian Long Weekend in Vietnam

With only a public holiday and a weekend, test whether Vietnam fits before you buy a ticket.

A Malaysian long weekend works for Vietnam if you pick one base, fly direct and keep the plan light. Three or four days is a short break, not a route. Anything that adds a second city or a long road leg takes the holiday away.

What does a long weekend really give you?

Count the effort before you count the sights. A direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1, and Da Nang is listed with the same four2. We cannot give flight times, so check them on the airline sites.

Plan the arrival and departure days as half days. Airport transfers use a share of each. Noi Bai is about 35 km northeast of downtown Hanoi3, so allow time to reach the city. What remains is two or three full days.

Which shapes work?

  • Three days, one city: Hanoi for streets, food and one short walk-based day. Or Da Nang for beach days.
  • Four days, one base: Da Nang with a Hoi An evening. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang4, so one full day is enough for it.
  • Four days, Hanoi: the city, then one nearby break from our short breaks near Hanoi guide.

Use the travel-day checker to test the day-by-day load before you buy tickets.

Which shapes fail?

Some plans look reasonable until you add the transfers.

  • Hanoi plus Sa Pa: Sa Pa is about 300 km northwest of Hanoi5, which uses a day each way.
  • A multi-stop central trip: Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue and Ba Na all in one go leaves no rest.
  • Island plans that need a connection: the connection can cost half a day.
  • Two regions: a domestic flight between Hanoi and Da Nang is a lost day.

What about other departure airports?

Penang International lists Ho Chi Minh City as its only Vietnam destination, served by AirAsia6. Kota Kinabalu and Johor Bahru follow the same pattern. For a long weekend, that points to Ho Chi Minh City as a base, unless you accept a connection through Kuala Lumpur.

See KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang to compare arrival cities. Then price your short trip with the Vietnam trip cost guide, and explore Hanoi or Da Nang. More short-leave advice sits in Seasons and who it suits.

Tell us your public holiday dates and departure airport, and we can say whether Vietnam fits that window and which base makes the best use of it.

Common questions

Is a long weekend enough for Vietnam?

It is enough for one base and a calm plan, not for a route. Three or four days work if you fly direct, stay in one place and accept two half-days of travel. Anything that adds a second city or a long road leg will eat the holiday.

Which destination suits a three-day weekend?

Hanoi or Da Nang, each as a single base. Both have direct flights from Kuala Lumpur. Hanoi suits food, streets and culture, while Da Nang suits beach and a short trip to Hoi An. Pick one, not both.

Which plans fail on a long weekend?

Plans that need long road legs or domestic flights fail first. Hanoi plus Sa Pa, Da Nang plus Hue plus Hoi An plus Ba Na in one go, and any island that needs a connecting flight all lose too much time to travel.

What if I fly from Penang, Kota Kinabalu or Johor Bahru?

Those airports list only Ho Chi Minh City as a direct route to Vietnam. For a long weekend, that points to Ho Chi Minh City as your base. Anything else means a connection through Kuala Lumpur, which uses up a large part of the weekend.
