Beach and culture

Beach Holiday With Some Sightseeing

You want beach days without missing Vietnam, so pick a base that gives you both.

For beach days plus real sightseeing, base yourself in Da Nang. The beach is at the door, Hoi An is close and My Son and Hue are manageable day trips. Nha Trang suits a lighter mix, where the beach and the bay islands come first.

Which base gives you what?

  • Da Nang: beach, Hoi An, My Son, Ba Na Hills and Hue from one hotel.
  • Nha Trang: beach and bay islands, with a few cultural stops.
  • Hoi An’s beach area: old-town evenings and a quiet beach, for slow couples.

Da Nang lists AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Nha Trang’s airport lists AirAsia as the only Malaysian airline2.

How far is each sight from Da Nang?

Keep half days for the near sights and full days for the far ones.

  • Hoi An: about 28 km south of Da Nang3. Its Ancient Town was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 19994.
  • My Son: about 68 km south-west of Da Nang and 36 km south of Hoi An5. It was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 19996.
  • Ba Na Hills: at an elevation of 1,500 m, 42 km from Da Nang7.
  • Hue: its monuments were inscribed in 19938, and Da Nang is the nearest international airport, 80 km south of Phu Bai9.

Read Hue as a day trip or overnight stop before you decide on Hue.

When should you go?

Da Nang lists its dry season as January to August and its wet and typhoon season as September to December10. Plan the sightseeing for dry weather and keep a beach-only day as a buffer. Our weather by month guide helps with your month.

What should you check before choosing?

  • How many days you have, and which sights you will drop first.
  • Whether you prefer one hotel for the whole trip.
  • Whether your dates fall in the wet months.
  • Who is coming, since long day trips tire toddlers and older relatives.

For a full comparison of the central stops, see Da Nang, Hoi An or Hue. For the base itself, read the Da Nang city guide and the Hoi An guide. More advice lives in Regions and where to go.

Common questions

Which base gives the best mix of beach and culture?

Da Nang. It has the beach itself, Hoi An's old town close by, My Son within a half-day trip and Hue as a longer day out. One hotel can serve all of it, so you unpack once. Nha Trang is a lighter option with a few cultural stops but fewer big sights.

Is Hue a day trip from Da Nang?

It can be, but it is a long day, so many travellers prefer a night in Hue or skip it on a short trip. The road between the two includes the Hai Van Pass. If you have only a week, spend your sightseeing time on Hoi An and My Son and keep Hue for a later visit.

Can Nha Trang work for sightseeing?

Yes, in a lighter way. You can add a Cham temple tower visit, a market morning and a boat day to a beach stay. It has fewer headline sights than Da Nang, so choose it when the beach and the islands come first and culture is a short add-on.

How many days do we need for beach plus sightseeing?

Five to six days work well at Da Nang. Give two days to the beach, one to Hoi An, one to My Son or Ba Na Hills, and keep one free. With fewer days, drop the farthest sight and keep the beach, because rushed sightseeing in the heat tires everyone.

When is the best month for this combination?

Da Nang's dry season runs from January to August, which suits both beach and sightseeing. Its wet and typhoon season runs from September to December, when outdoor days are harder to plan. Check your month in our weather guide, and keep one spare day for rain.
