Central Highlands

The Central Highlands: Da Lat, Buon Ma Thuot and Beyond

Cool air and coffee country, without the heat of the coast.

The Central Highlands are cooler plateau country inland from the coast. Da Lat is the easy, polished part, a hill town built for visitors. Buon Ma Thuot is the deeper part, a working coffee city where the pace is local rather than touristy.

What makes the highlands different from the coast?

Altitude changes the mood. Mornings are cool, afternoons are mild and the landscape is pine, farms and waterfalls rather than beach. Malaysians who find the coast too hot tend to enjoy the contrast.

The highlands are also slower to cross. Roads climb and wind, so plan a transfer as a travel day rather than a quick hop.

How does Da Lat differ from the deeper coffee country?

Da Lat is where you rest. It has stay areas for couples and families, cafe streets and short outings. Our Da Lat guide explains which areas suit which traveller.

Buon Ma Thuot is where you look at how the highlands work. Coffee farms, waterfalls and market food are the draw, and the town is more practical than pretty. Read the Buon Ma Thuot guide to see what a stay there looks like.
