Vietnam During Ramadan: Planning for Muslim Travellers

Fasting, buka puasa and prayer times fit a Vietnam trip once you plan the day around them.

Vietnam can work during Ramadan if you build the day around sahur, a quiet middle of the day and buka puasa. The country does not slow down for the fasting month, so the planning is yours to do, and it is easier before you pay than after. This page covers timing, prayer access and what to confirm.

Is Ramadan a good time to visit Vietnam?

It is workable, with a lighter plan than usual. Vietnam is not a Muslim-majority country: its 2019 census counted 70,934 Muslims3. Restaurants, tours and transport run as normal, so nothing is arranged for fasting unless you ask.

That has one upside. Sightseeing is not crowded with Ramadan bazaars or closures, so you set your own pace. Pick a base where you can return to your room in the afternoon, rather than a route with a new hotel every night.

How should you shape a fasting day?

Think in three blocks: before dawn, the long middle, and sunset.

  • Before dawn: ask the hotel whether breakfast can be packed or served early. If not, bring dates, oats or instant meals, and check the room has a kettle.
  • Morning to afternoon: keep one outing a day, and keep it indoors or by the water. Rest during the hottest hours.
  • Sunset: end the day near your hotel or near a place you have already confirmed for buka puasa. Do not leave it to chance on a tour bus.

A day with one anchor activity feels calm, even when you are tired. Our slow travel guide explains how few bases suit a short trip.

Where can you pray?

Plan on praying in your hotel room. Bring a prayer mat and a qibla app, and ask the front desk to confirm the direction at check-in.

Two cities offer a mosque to anchor your day. Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi was built between 1885 and 1890 and holds about 200 people1. In Ho Chi Minh City, the Saigon Central Mosque was completed in 19352. Check visiting times and dress expectations locally, since we cannot confirm them.

Away from these cities, such as bay cruises or mountain trips, assume private prayer and ask the supplier for stops.

What about Tet and school holidays?

Check Tet against your Ramadan weeks. Tet 2027 falls on 6 February 20274, and the public holiday lasts 7 days, or 9 days when the first day of the lunar year falls Monday to Wednesday5. Shops close and transport fills up in that period.

If your dates overlap, either move the trip or ask the supplier, in writing, how meals and transfers will run on those days.

What should you confirm with the supplier?

Put these questions in one message and keep the replies:

  • Pickup and return times each day, so you reach your hotel before sunset.
  • Which meals are included, and who prepares them.
  • Whether each meal is Muslim-owned, certified, or only pork-free. The difference matters, and our meal and prayer checks explain it.
  • Prayer breaks on long travel days.
  • Room details: kettle, fridge, early breakfast.

For wording you can copy, see what to include in a package enquiry.

What next?

Choose a region first. The north Vietnam guide for Muslim travellers and the central Vietnam guide set out what each region offers. Then match your month to the weather in Vietnam weather by month, and see more season advice in Seasons and who it suits.

Common questions

Is it practical to travel in Vietnam while fasting?

Yes, if the plan is light. Choose a base with short outings, keep the hottest hours for rest in an air-conditioned room, and ask for a late first activity. Whether to fast while travelling is a personal and religious matter, so decide that with your own scholar. We cover the logistics only.

How do I arrange sahur and buka puasa at a hotel?

Ask the hotel in writing whether breakfast can be packed or served before dawn, and whether a kettle, fridge or microwave is in the room. For buka puasa, ask what time the restaurant can serve at sunset. Tour days can end late, so confirm when the group returns.

Where can we pray if there is no mosque nearby?

Praying in the hotel room works well, using a prayer mat and a qibla app. Ask the hotel for the qibla direction at check-in. In Hanoi, Al-Noor Mosque is an anchor, and in Ho Chi Minh City there is the Saigon Central Mosque. Outside these two cities, plan on private prayer.

Should I avoid Tet when planning around Ramadan?

Check both calendars for your year. Tet is a long public holiday when shops and restaurants close, and transport is full of people going home. If your Ramadan weeks overlap with Tet, move the trip or ask the supplier how meals and transfers will work on those days.

What should I confirm with the supplier before paying?

Ask for meal arrangements, pickup and return times, prayer breaks and room details in writing. Ask who prepares each meal and whether it is Muslim-owned, certified, or only pork-free. A clear written answer protects you if the plan changes after payment.
