Traditional shows

Water Puppets, Ca Tru or Nha Nhac

Three famous performances, one evening to spare: pick the one you will actually enjoy.

If this is your first traditional performance in Vietnam, choose water puppets. They are visual, easy to follow and friendly to all ages. Choose ca tru if you want an intimate evening of sung poetry, and nha nhac if you are in Hue and enjoy ceremonial music.

What is each form?

  • Water puppets: wooden puppets move on a stage that is a pool of water, worked by performers behind a screen, with live music and short village-life scenes.
  • Ca tru: a quiet chamber form where a female singer keeps time with small percussion while a lute player accompanies her sung poetry.
  • Nha nhac: court music, associated with the royal ceremonies of Hue, with ensembles, costume and slow, formal pacing.

Hue became the capital of the newly unified country in 18021, which is why court music is tied to that city.

Which one suits your group?

Families with children and grandparents should choose water puppets. They are seated, visual and short on talk. See water puppet show Hanoi for theatre choice and booking.

Return visitors who have already seen puppets can try ca tru in Hanoi. Expect a small room and a slow evening, so it is not a good fit for restless children.

In Hue, Royal Court Music is the natural choice. If your route visits both cities, Hue or Hanoi for heritage can help you decide where to spend your time.

Book ahead where you can, because small venues have limited seats. Arrive a little early so you can pick a seat with a clear view.

What should you check before you buy?

  • The venue and the real performance days.
  • Whether seats are numbered and whether there is a seated option for older relatives.
  • What the programme is in plain terms, and whether there is an English introduction.
  • Whether the ticket price includes any extras.

Seniors will find more seated ideas in cultural experiences for seniors. Compare the places in our Hanoi and Hue guides, and browse Attractions and culture for more.

Common questions

Which traditional show is best for a first visit to Vietnam?

Water puppets are the easiest first choice. The story is visual, the puppets are colourful and you do not need to understand the language. Ca tru and nha nhac reward patience and some background, so they suit people who already enjoy listening to traditional music.

Do I need to understand Vietnamese for these shows?

Not for water puppets, because the action tells the story. For ca tru, the sung poetry is the point, so a short written or spoken summary helps. For nha nhac, music and costume carry most of the meaning, though a short introduction in English makes it easier to follow.

Can I see all three on one trip?

Yes, if your route covers Hanoi and Hue. Water puppets and ca tru are commonly found in Hanoi, while nha nhac is linked to Hue. Each is a separate booking, so check dates early because some performances do not run every day.
