Beach, Old Town and Saigon in One Trip

A relaxed beach start, a lantern-lit old town, then a big-city finish with the flight timed well.

This route gives you three nights of coast, a slow old town and a big-city finish in eight days. The one tricky part is the flight from the centre to the south, and we show how to time it. It works well for friends and first-timers who want rest first and energy last.

Who is this route for?

It suits a group of friends or a first-timer who prefers a beach and a lantern-lit old town over mountains. It also fits families with older children.

Fly in to Da Nang, which is listed with direct Kuala Lumpur flights on AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Fly home from Ho Chi Minh City, listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2.

The route at a glance

  • Day 2: Marble Mountains and a lazy beach afternoon.
  • Day 3: move to Hoi An and explore the old town.
  • Day 4: a free day in Hoi An, with an optional beach or cooking class.
  • Day 5: a morning outing, then a rest afternoon.
  • Day 6: fly to Ho Chi Minh City and settle in.
  • Day 7: the city centre, markets and a river evening.
  • Day 8: a calm morning and your flight home.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Da Nang

Keep the first day empty. Check in, eat a simple dinner and walk the beach as the light fades. A flat evening is a gentle start for everyone.

Day 2: Marble Mountains and the beach

Go to the Marble Mountains in the morning, when it is cooler. The site includes a gateway leading to Huyen Khong Cave3. Take the steps slowly and choose a shorter path if anyone tires.

After lunch, spend the afternoon on the sand or by a pool. Da Nang’s dry season runs from January to August4, so that stretch gives the best chance of clear beach days.

Day 3: move to Hoi An

Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang5, so the drive is short. Check in, then walk the old town in the late afternoon. The town joined the World Heritage List in 19996.

Eat early, before the lanes fill, and stay on for the lanterns after dark.

Day 4: a free day

Start with a market walk and a slow coffee. After lunch, rest in your room through the heat. In the evening, choose between a river boat or a quiet table by the water. Leave the day open on purpose; this is the rest day of the trip.

Day 5: one morning outing

Pick one outing: a sunrise viewpoint, a cooking class, or a bicycle ride through the paddy edges. Hang Mua is a popular viewpoint, and our Hang Mua Viewpoint guide explains the climb and the timing. Return by noon and rest.

Day 6: the flight to Saigon

Book a morning departure from Da Nang, and keep bags light. It is a short domestic flight, but the airport time at both ends makes this your travel day. Do not add a sight on arrival; check in, eat and walk a little.

Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April7. Carry a light rain layer in the wet months.

Day 7: the city centre

Walk the central streets in the morning, visit the markets, then take a long lunch indoors. In the late afternoon, ride a Grab to the river and watch the evening lights.

Day 8: fly home

Keep the morning free for a last coffee. Pack the night before and leave early for the airport.

Where should you base yourself?

Choose areas, not hotel names.

  • Da Nang: the beach side for rest, the river side for restaurants.
  • Hoi An: near the old town for evenings, toward the beach for quiet.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: the central district for walking and taxis.

How can you adjust it?

For a shorter trip, remove Day 5 and give each base one fewer night. For more time, add a second night in Da Nang and a half-day to Ba Na Hills, which sits 1,500 m up and is 42 km from Da Nang8. Compare your pace with our guide on Da Nang, Hoi An or Hue.

What should you book ahead?

  • Your flights, first, since they set every other date.
  • The Da Nang to Saigon flight, booked as a morning departure.
  • A Hoi An stay in your preferred zone, especially around festivals.
  • Muslim-friendly meal stops, checked in advance with a displayed certificate and an issuer you can name.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, three bases, the internal flight, tickets, meals and extras. Prices change by season, so enter current quotes into the trip budget builder rather than trusting a number from a page.

Check the plan with the travel-day checker, and read about the open-jaw option for flying in and out of different cities. To see each base, open Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.

Common questions

Why start in Da Nang and finish in Ho Chi Minh City?

Because both cities have direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, you can fly in to one and home from the other. That removes a backtracking day. Beach and old town first leaves the busier city for the end, when the group has settled into the trip.

What is the best time of year for this route?

The dry months suit the coast better. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December, so those months carry the most risk. Saigon is wet from May to November in short heavy bursts, which is easier to plan around than typhoon days.

How should we book the flight from Da Nang to Saigon?

Choose a morning departure and treat the whole day as travel. Allow time to leave the hotel, check in and collect bags. Avoid a tight connection by booking this flight on its own, with a free evening on arrival.

Is this itinerary suitable for a group of friends?

Yes, because it mixes slow beach days with lively evenings and gives the group a shared decision point on Day 6. Split into two small cars on the road legs if you are more than four, and agree a meeting time before free hours.

Can we add Ba Na Hills or Cham Islands?

You can add one, not both. Ba Na Hills works as a half-day from Da Nang, and the Cham Islands deserve a full day from Hoi An, as our [Cham Islands guide](/destinations/cham-islands/) explains. Choose the one that suits the weather, and keep the other for a return visit.
