City, Culture and a Phu Quoc Beach Finish

Finish a longer trip on an island beach, with the three flights fitted together calmly.

This twelve-day route runs city and culture first, then ends on a quiet island beach. The three flights are the only complicated part, and we set them out below. It suits first-timers and slow couples who want to arrive home rested.

Who is this route for?

It suits first-timers who want a full taste of Vietnam and couples who prefer a calm pace. It also suits anyone who wants a beach stay that is not a rush.

Hanoi is served from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Phu Quoc is listed with AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways flying to Kuala Lumpur International, and Berjaya Air to Kuala Lumpur-Subang2.

The route at a glance

  • Days 1 to 3: Hanoi, for streets, food and heritage.
  • Day 4: fly to Da Nang and move to Hoi An.
  • Days 5 to 7: Da Nang and Hoi An, with a free half-day.
  • Day 8: fly to Phu Quoc.
  • Days 9 to 11: Phu Quoc, for rest and beach.
  • Day 12: fly home.

How do the three flights fit?

First, Hanoi to Da Nang. Second, Da Nang to Phu Quoc. Third, Phu Quoc home to Kuala Lumpur.

We could not confirm a direct Da Nang to Phu Quoc flight in our notes. Check airline timetables, and if a connection is needed, expect it to run through Ho Chi Minh City.

Treat Day 8 as a full travel day with nothing else planned. Book your home flight first, then the internal flights. Our Da Nang or Phu Quoc beach comparison helps you decide how long to stay on the island.

Day by day

Days 1 to 3: Hanoi

Noi Bai is about 35 km northeast of downtown Hanoi3, so allow time for the road in. Keep Day 1 light. On Day 2, spend a morning at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, whose central sector was inscribed in 20104, and rest in the afternoon. Day 3 is free: coffee, the lake and a long dinner.

Hanoi’s coolest month is January, with a mean of 16.4 C5, so bring a light layer if you go in winter.

Day 4: fly to Da Nang

Book a morning flight and move to Hoi An by car. It lies some 28 km south of Da Nang6. Check in, rest, and walk the old town at dusk.

Days 5 to 7: Da Nang and Hoi An

Hoi An Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 19997. Spend Day 5 in the old town, Day 6 at the beach or a market, and Day 7 free. Da Nang’s dry season runs from January to August8, so beach days are likelier then.

Day 8: fly to Phu Quoc

A full travel day. The airport has the code PQC9 and was put into operation on 2 December 201210. Check in, rest, and go to bed early.

Days 9 to 11: Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc has a total area of 575 km211, so it is large enough to feel like a trip in itself. The rainy season runs roughly April to November and the dry season roughly December to March12, so the best beach weeks fall in the dry months.

Spend the days on the sand, a short boat trip and long dinners. Do nothing that needs an alarm. Read the Phu Quoc guide for stay areas and what to expect.

Passports need to be valid for 6 months from the arrival date13, so check yours before you book.

Day 12: fly home

Keep the morning free and leave for the airport with time to spare.

Where should you base yourself?

Choose areas, not hotel names.

  • Hanoi: the Old Quarter, or near the lake for quiet.
  • Hoi An: close to the old town, or toward the beach.
  • Phu Quoc: a quiet beach, away from the busiest strip.

How can you adjust it?

For ten days, shorten Hanoi to two nights and Hoi An to two. For more time, add a second night in Hanoi for a day trip. If you are unsure about the island, read Da Nang or Phu Quoc first.

What should you book ahead?

  • Your home flight from Phu Quoc, first.
  • The Da Nang to Phu Quoc connection, once confirmed.
  • A beach stay in the dry months, which fills first.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, three internal flights, three bases, meals and tickets. Prices change by season, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes. For a shorter trip, read Hanoi and Da Nang combo in 5D4N. Browse more itineraries and open Phu Quoc and Da Nang for the two coastal stops.

Common questions

Why finish on Phu Quoc?

A beach at the end lets you rest after a busy city and culture trip, and it keeps your last flight home simple. Phu Quoc has direct flights to Kuala Lumpur. You return with a tan and a clear head, instead of a rushed last day.

Is there a direct flight from Da Nang to Phu Quoc?

We could not confirm a direct flight in our notes, so check airline schedules before you book. If there is none, expect a connection, most likely through Ho Chi Minh City. Treat the day as a travel day with nothing else planned.

What is the best time for this route?

Phu Quoc has a dry season from roughly December to March, which suits the beach finish. Da Nang is in its dry season from January to August, so January to March works for both. Hanoi is cooler then, so bring a light layer.

Is twelve days too much for a slow couple?

No. Each base has a free half-day, and the long moves are spaced with rest. You will see enough without feeling rushed. If you want fewer flights, drop Hanoi and spend the days on the central coast and the island.

Can we fly home directly from Phu Quoc?

Yes. Phu Quoc is listed with AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways flying to Kuala Lumpur International, and Berjaya Air to Kuala Lumpur-Subang. Check current schedules, because routes change, and book your home flight before the internal ones.
