Hanoi and Sapa on Short Leave
Four days sounds like plenty until the train or road leg is counted.
Four days is enough for one day in Hanoi and one real day in Sapa, but only if you plan the transfer first. The overnight train or the road leg eats a large part of the clock. This page counts it honestly and tells you what to cut.
Who is this for?
It suits short-leave employees, first-timers and couples who want mountains and a city without a long break. It is not the best fit for toddlers or elders because of the cold, the stairs and the travel.
Sapa is approximately 300 km northwest of Hanoi in Lao Cai province1. The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km on a single metre-gauge track2. These are distances, not hours, so we count your time in blocks.
How much time is really left?
Subtract first. Your arrival and departure days are mostly flights and airport transfers. The Sapa leg uses most of a day, either in daylight or overnight.
That leaves roughly one usable day in Hanoi and one in Sapa. If that sounds thin, extend the trip, or use our travel-day checker to test your own times.
Version A: daytime road plan
Day 1: arrive in Hanoi
Land, check in and keep the afternoon light. Walk the old streets and eat early.
Day 2: Hanoi to Sapa
Leave after breakfast by private car or coach. Treat the move as most of a day, and stop only for lunch. In the evening, walk Sapa town and sleep.
Day 3: Sapa
This is your one full mountain day. Take a gentle walk to a nearby village or the cable car. Fansipan is 3,147.3 m high and is Vietnam’s highest peak4, but cloud may hide it, so be ready to swap.
Day 4: back to Hanoi and fly home
Return by road in the morning and keep a buffer before your flight. Book an evening flight, not midday.
Version B: night train plan
Day 1: arrive in Hanoi and board
Spend the day in Hanoi, then take the night train to Lao Cai. You sleep on the train and arrive early. The last part into Sapa is a road transfer.
Day 2: Sapa
Check in early or store bags. Walk slowly at first, because a night on a train tires the body. Keep the afternoon free.
Day 3: Sapa, then night train back
Use the morning for the main outing, then travel back by night. You gain a day in Sapa but lose a bed.
Day 4: Hanoi and flight
Arrive early in Hanoi, rest and fly home in the evening. Everything slips if the train is late, so leave a buffer.
What should you cut?
- Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. They need their own days, so keep them for another trip.
- A second Hanoi day. One day is enough for lake, old streets and food.
- Long treks. Choose one short walk instead.
What do you need to know about Sapa weather and Fansipan?
Sapa’s annual mean is 15.3 C. January averages 8.7 C and July 19.9 C3. Pack warm layers, even if you are used to heat.
The Fansipan cable car listed hours of 07:30 to 17:00 when we checked, and operating hours may change5. It resumed after scheduled maintenance on 28 September 20266, so confirm it is running before you book.
Where should you stay?
In Hanoi, a base near the Old Quarter keeps transfers short. In Sapa, choose the town centre if you want walkable meals, or a valley view stay for quiet. Read Sapa Town for areas.
How can you adjust it?
If you can add two days, split them between a second Sapa night and a slow Hanoi morning. For a longer mountain stay, see the Sapa trek and homestay itinerary. To compare mountain options, read the mountain regions guide.
What will it cost?
Price flights, three nights, the Sapa legs and entries as separate lines. Rates change, so put current quotes in the trip budget builder. For more routes, see itineraries.

Common questions
Is 4D3N enough for Hanoi and Sapa?
It is enough for a short, focused trip, not a full one. The two flight days and the Sapa transfer take most of the time. Expect about one day in Hanoi and one real day in Sapa. If you want trekking as well, add at least two more days.
Should we take the night train or go by road?
The night train saves a hotel night but gives broken sleep, and it still ends with a road transfer into Sapa town. Road by day costs a morning but lets you sleep in a bed. Pick by how you sleep and how old your group is.
Which is better for Sapa, day or night travel?
Day travel shows you the mountain road and suits seniors and children. A night train suits couples and friends who sleep easily on trains. Either way, plan a slow first morning in Sapa, since cold or fog can change plans.
What is the weather like in Sapa?
Sapa is cool all year. Its annual mean is 15.3 C, with January averaging 8.7 C and July 19.9 C. Pack layers and a light rain jacket. Rain falls mostly from April to September, and low cloud can hide views, so keep your photo plans flexible.
Can we do Fansipan in this trip?
Yes, as a cable car visit, if the weather is clear. Check that it is running before you pay, because it has scheduled maintenance closures. Treat a clear window as a bonus, not a promise, and leave a half day in case you must wait.
