Itinerary

Northern Vietnam for Photographers

Good light is short, so the route must protect the first and last hour of each day.

Shoot the first and last hour of each day, and travel in between. That one rule shapes this route from Ninh Binh through Mai Chau to Moc Chau. Done well, the transfers fall in the flat midday light you would not use anyway.

Who is this route for?

It suits photographers and slow-travelling couples who would rather wait for the light than tick off sights. You should be comfortable with early starts and a few simple stays. If you are alone with heavy gear, a private car makes the days much easier.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: Hanoi to Ninh Binh, with an evening shoot at the limestone fields.
  • Day 2: Trang An by boat in the morning, then a transfer towards Mai Chau.
  • Day 3: Mai Chau valley at dawn, villages and paddies in the day.
  • Day 4: a second Mai Chau light, then the road to Moc Chau.
  • Day 5: Moc Chau tea hills at dawn, then return to Hanoi.

Add a sixth day as a buffer for weather, or for a slow last morning.

Day by day

Day 1: Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Leave Hanoi after breakfast. Check in, rest and then go out for the last hour of light. Scout the paddies and the limestone outlines so you know where you will stand tomorrow.

Day 2: Trang An at first light

The Trang An landscape was inscribed on 23 June 20141. Take the earliest boat you can, because the water is calm and the light is gentle. Keep a dry bag for your gear.

Then travel towards Mai Chau. This is a long road day, so treat the afternoon as transit time, not shooting time. Read Ninh Binh for where to stay.

Day 3: Mai Chau in the valley light

Walk out before sunrise and look for mist lying over the paddies. Return for breakfast, then use the harsh midday hours to rest and edit. Go out again in the last hour to catch the stilt houses and paddies in warm light. See Mai Chau for the valley layout.

Day 4: a second Mai Chau dawn, then Moc Chau

Repeat the dawn walk, because conditions change by the day. Then take the road to Moc Chau and arrive with some light left for the tea hills. See Moc Chau for the plateau.

Day 5: Moc Chau, then Hanoi

Be on the tea rows at first light, when mist and low sun create depth. Then return to Hanoi by road. Book an evening flight, not midday, in case the road runs slow. For a shorter version, see the Hanoi to Moc Chau weekend itinerary.

How do you plan around light, mist and the seasons?

The delta’s rainy season runs roughly April or May to October or November2. Rain and cloud flatten the light, but wet mornings can give strong mist. Hanoi’s coolest month is January, averaging 16.4 C3, so cool months suit mist and winter layers.

Rice terraces are green in the growing season, golden before harvest and bare after. Our guide to rice terrace regions compares timing and places.

What if the weather goes wrong?

Have one swap for each stop. In Ninh Binh, shoot the covered markets or the river village life. In Mai Chau, use village interiors, textiles and kitchens. In Moc Chau, wait a day if the tea hills are under cloud.

Do not drive mountain roads in the dark to rescue a shot. A missed sunrise is easier to forgive than a dangerous road.

Where should you stay?

Choose homestays or lodges close to your shooting spot, so you can walk out at dawn. Avoid places that require a long drive before first light. Ask each host which side of the valley catches the first sun.

What should you book ahead?

  • A private car with a driver who will start early.
  • The Trang An boat slot you want.
  • Homestays near the paddies in Mai Chau.
  • A flexible final night, in case weather delays the road.

What will it cost?

Price the car by day, rooms, boat tickets and meals as separate lines. Rates change, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes. For a comparison of regions, read Best northern areas for photography.

Common questions

How many days does this photography route need?

Give it five or six days from Hanoi. That allows one night in Ninh Binh, two in Mai Chau and one in Moc Chau, with a buffer morning. Fewer days force you to shoot from the car window. A slow pace means you can wait for the light.

What time of day is best for these places?

Early morning and the last hour before sunset give the softest light and the best chance of mist. The middle of the day is flat and hazy, so use it for transfers, meals and rest. Ask your host which side of the valley catches the first sun.

When are the rice terraces at their best?

They are green in the growing season and golden before harvest, and bare after it. The exact weeks shift each year, so ask your lodge for the current stage before you plan a shot. Our rice terrace guide compares the regions.

Can we shoot Trang An from a boat?

Yes, the boat ride is the main way to see the limestone river scenery. Bring a dry bag, a lens cloth and a wide lens, and expect to shoot from a seated position. Rain gear matters because open boats get wet quickly.

What if the weather ruins the shot?

Stay one extra night where you can, or swap to indoor and village subjects, such as markets, weaving or kitchens. Keep a spare half day in the plan. Do not drive late on mountain roads in low cloud just to rescue a shot.
