Itinerary

Northern Vietnam With a Toddler

A trip with a toddler works when naps decide the day, not the sights.

Hanoi and Ninh Binh suit a toddler if naps decide each day. Put the main outing in the morning, return for lunch and rest, and keep the evening light. This six-day plan keeps transfers short and tells you what to skip with under-fives.

Who is this route for?

It suits young families with a toddler or a child under five, and parents who want a calm trip with a few good moments. It leaves out the mountains, long coach legs and overnight boats, which are hard with small children.

Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Choose a daytime flight if you can, so your child sleeps on the plane and not at the airport.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Hanoi and rest.
  • Day 2: a lakeside morning, then a long afternoon sleep.
  • Day 3: a park or museum morning, with one easy extra.
  • Day 4: move to Ninh Binh during nap time.
  • Day 5: a seated boat ride and a quiet afternoon.
  • Day 6: return to Hanoi and fly home.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Hanoi

Noi Bai is about 35 km north-east of downtown2. Book a private transfer with a child seat if you can, and do not plan anything after check-in. Eat in the hotel or nearby and get an early night.

Day 2: a lakeside morning

Go out after breakfast, when it is cooler and quieter. Walk by the lake, let your toddler run on level ground and stop for a snack. Return to the hotel for lunch and a long sleep.

In the late afternoon, take a short, easy walk or stay in. Read Where to stay in Hanoi with young children for calmer areas.

Day 3: a park or museum morning

Choose one place with space to roam, such as a park or an outdoor museum. Keep the visit short and leave when your child shows signs of tiredness. A water puppet show can work if your child is calm in the dark, but check the length before you go.

Skip crowded streets after dusk. Use Grab from the door, which operates in Vietnam3, and ask for a car with a child seat if one is available.

Day 4: move to Ninh Binh

Start the drive just before nap time so your toddler sleeps on the road. Count it as a half-day move with a stop for toilet and snacks. Check in, play quietly and have an early dinner.

Day 5: a seated boat ride

Trang An was inscribed on 23 June 20144. The boat ride is seated and flat, which suits a toddler, but bring a hat, a life jacket that fits and plenty of water. Skip any viewpoint with a long stone stairway.

Rest after lunch and keep the afternoon free. See Ninh Binh for where to base yourself.

Day 6: back to Hanoi and fly home

Leave after breakfast and book an evening flight, so the nap falls in the car or at the airport lounge. Bring snacks, a favourite toy and a spare set of clothes.

What should you skip with under-fives?

  • Steep staircases and hilltop viewpoints.
  • Overnight boats and cruises.
  • Long mountain roads such as those to Sapa or Ha Giang.
  • Night markets and crowded lanes after dusk.

Where should you stay?

Choose a hotel on a quiet street with a lift and a bath. In Hanoi, the French Quarter or a lakeside area is calmer than the Old Quarter. Ask whether the room is away from the main lane, since noise can break a nap.

How can you adjust it?

For a shorter trip, drop Ninh Binh and add a short day outside Hanoi. See Short breaks near Hanoi for easy ideas. For a longer trip, add a second night in Ninh Binh.

If your child is unwell, cancel the plan and rest. A missed outing is easy to replace.

What should you book ahead?

  • A private car with a child seat for long legs.
  • A hotel with a lift and a quiet room.
  • A Trang An boat slot in the morning.
  • Travel insurance, and the address of a clinic near each stay.

What will it cost?

Price flights, five nights, private car legs and meals as separate lines. Rates change by season, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes. Check your move with the travel-day checker, and see more routes in itineraries.

Common questions

Is northern Vietnam suitable for a toddler?

Yes, if you keep it to Hanoi and Ninh Binh and plan for naps. Pavements are shared with motorbikes and stalls, so a carrier is usually easier than a stroller. Skip the mountains and overnight boats until the child is older.

How do we handle naps while travelling?

Schedule the long transfer to start just before nap time, so your toddler sleeps in the car. Keep morning outings short and return to the hotel for the afternoon sleep. Have one quiet evening where nothing is booked, as a spare if the day slips.

Should we bring a stroller or a carrier?

Bring both if you can. A light stroller helps at the airport and on flat paths, but pavements and old lanes are uneven. A carrier is easier for the Old Quarter. Check the hotel has room to store a stroller and a lift.

Are child seats available in cars?

Do not assume so. Ask your driver or hotel in advance, and bring a light travel booster or harness if you can. Book a private car for the longer legs, and agree who sets up the seat. Grab cars may not have one.

What should we skip with under-fives?

Skip steep stone stairways, crowded night markets and overnight boats. Choose a seated boat ride, a lakeside walk and a park instead. Keep each day to one main outing, and cut it if your child is tired or unwell.
