Phu Quoc with Kids: Beach and Big Outings

One resort base, three big outings spread across the island, and beach days in between.

Five days in Phu Quoc suits a family when you keep one resort and treat each big attraction as its own outing. Put a beach day between them. The island is long, and the safari, the theme park and the cable car are not close to each other, so spreading them out saves everyone’s patience.

Who is this route for?

It suits families with school-age children, and parents with a child who copes well with a car seat and a few outings. It also suits two couples travelling together. For younger children, use Phu Quoc with a toddler. For older relatives, use the grandparents plan.

How do we get there?

Phu Quoc is listed with AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways flying to Kuala Lumpur International1. The airport has IATA code PQC and ICAO code VVPQ2. Check current schedules on the airline sites, because routes change.

The island covers 575 km2 in total4. That is small on a map but slow to cross with a toddler. Ask your resort how long each transfer takes at the time you travel.

What is the route at a glance?

  • Day 1: arrive, settle into the resort, a short beach walk.
  • Day 2: the safari and nature outing in the north-west.
  • Day 3: a full beach and pool day.
  • Day 4: the south: cable car and sea views.
  • Day 5: a slow morning and the flight home.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and settle

Keep the first day short. After the flight, check in, swim for a little and eat early. Walk the beach in the evening so everyone sleeps.

Day 2: safari and nature

Go early to the safari park in the north-west of the island. Take hats, water and a pushchair for the youngest. The ride in is long, so pack snacks and a small toy for the car.

Plan most of the day for this outing, and return to the resort for a rest. Last entry times are not in our fact list, so check them the night before. If a child is tired by lunchtime, shorten the visit and do not push it.

Day 3: beach and pool

This is the day children will remember. Let them play in the sand, take a long lunch and swim again. The dry season runs roughly December to March, and the rainy season roughly April to November3. In the rainy months, keep a plan for a wet beach day.

Day 4: the south and the cable car

The cable car sits in the south, far from the safari. Go in the morning, when the air is cooler, and leave the theme park for another trip. Wind can close a cable car, and we cannot confirm hours, so ask your hotel to check the day before.

After the ride, eat near the south coast and head back to the resort for a swim. If the cable car is closed, use the day for a sunset beach and a night market instead.

Day 5: slow morning and flight

Keep the morning free. Pack, swim briefly and eat a calm breakfast. Reach the airport with time to spare, since a small island airport can be busy in the morning.

Where should we stay?

Choose an area, not a hotel name. A west-coast resort with a gentle beach is easier for children, and a resort with a kids’ pool saves a lot of effort. Compare rates yourself, because prices change by season. Read Planning Phu Quoc with children: what to check before you book.

When should we go?

Vietnam is affected by 6 to 8 typhoons or tropical cyclones a year5. For a family trip, pick the drier months if you can, and keep one buffer day. Our island profile has more on the island.

How can we adjust it?

For a shorter trip, drop the cable car day. For a slower trip, add a second beach day. If one child is unwell, rest a day and swap the order. If you want a sightseeing day for the whole island, read Phu Quoc south and north island tour day routes.

What should we book ahead?

  • Flights, which set every other date.
  • A family room or two connecting rooms at the resort.
  • A car with child seats for the outing days.
  • Tickets, only after checking last entry and closure rules.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, four nights, car hire, tickets and meals. Prices change by season, so plug in today’s quotes with the trip budget builder. To compare beach choices, read Da Nang vs Phu Quoc for a beach holiday, or browse more itineraries.

Common questions

How many days do we need in Phu Quoc with children?

Five days works well: arrival, three activity outings and a beach day between each, then departure. Four days is possible if you drop one attraction. Three days feels rushed once you count travel and a tired child. If you also want a full rest day, add a night.

Should we stay in one resort or move around the island?

One resort is simpler with children. You unpack once, the pool and beach are always near and nap times stay predictable. The attractions are day outings by car, so you do not need to change hotels to see the north and the south.

When is the best time to go with children?

The dry season, roughly December to March, is the calmer window for the sea. The rainy season runs roughly April to November, so showers and rough water are more likely. Vietnam also has typhoon risk each year, so avoid peak storm months if your dates are flexible.

How far apart are the big attractions?

Far enough that you should not combine the north and the south on one day. We do not give drive times because they depend on traffic, the road and where your resort sits. Ask your hotel to confirm each transfer and plan most of a morning for the long ones.

Is Phu Quoc suitable for a toddler or a grandparent?

Yes, with changes. For a toddler, see our toddler plan with shorter drives and calmer beaches. For grandparents, choose one outing a day and a car with air-conditioning. Both guides use the same resort-base approach as this plan.
