Vietnam with School-Age Kids, Hands-On
Activities children can do with their hands, and long car journeys kept to the days that need them.
This ten-day plan gives children things to make, climb and paddle, and keeps the long road days to the minimum. It runs Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City, with a flight between each. Plan it around your school holidays and check Vietnam’s own holiday calendar first.
Who is this route for?
It suits parents with children old enough to walk a morning, sit through a flight and follow a simple plan. It is also good for families who want children to learn something without sitting in a classroom.
Fly in to Hanoi, listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air from Kuala Lumpur1. Fly home from Ho Chi Minh City, listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2.
The route at a glance
- Days 1 and 2: Hanoi, with a cooking or craft activity.
- Days 3 and 4: Ha Long Bay, with a boat night.
- Day 5: fly to the centre and settle in Hoi An.
- Days 6 and 7: Hoi An, with lanterns, bicycles and the beach.
- Day 8: fly to Ho Chi Minh City.
- Day 9: a city day, with an optional tunnel visit.
- Day 10: fly home.
Day by day
Days 1 and 2: Hanoi
Day 1 is arrival, a short walk and an early dinner. On Day 2, book a hands-on session such as a cooking class or a craft workshop in the morning. Spend the afternoon at the lake, with a cold drink and a rest.
Days 3 and 4: Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 19943. Take the road transfer on Day 3, and spend a night aboard a boat with a few activities such as kayaking if the children are confident in water. Return to Hanoi on Day 4 with a quiet evening.
Choose a boat with life jackets in children’s sizes, and check how much of the day is on the water compared with in a coach. Read more in our Ha Long Bay guide.
Day 5: fly to the centre
Book a morning flight and travel by car to Hoi An. It lies some 28 km south of Da Nang4, so the drive is short. Do nothing big on arrival: a pool swim and an early dinner are enough.
Days 6 and 7: Hoi An
Hoi An Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 19995. Day 6 is lantern making and a flat walk in the morning, then a rest in the heat. On Day 7, take a bicycle ride along the paddy edges and spend the afternoon at the beach. Hang Mua offers a viewpoint for older children; see our Hang Mua Viewpoint guide before you decide.
Day 8: fly to Ho Chi Minh City
Take a morning flight and keep the afternoon free. The city has a tropical savanna climate, with a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April6. Carry a light rain layer in the wet months.
Day 9: a city day
Spend the morning at a museum or market. For a hands-on half-day, Ben Dinh is the Cu Chi site closer to the city, with reconstructed tunnels enlarged for visitors7. Some children enjoy the tunnels, and some do not, so let them choose at the entrance.
Day 10: fly home
Keep the morning free and leave early for the airport.
What about Vietnamese holidays?
Check the local calendar. Tet 2027 falls on 6 February 20278, and the Tet public holiday is 7 days, or 9 days if the first day of the lunar year falls Monday to Wednesday9. National Day on 2 September is a 2-day holiday, or 4 days if it falls Friday to Tuesday10.
Shops, sights and flights fill up during these dates, and prices can rise. Book early, or move your dates.
Where should you base yourself?
Choose areas, not hotel names.
- Hanoi: near the lake, for short walks and a quieter evening.
- Hoi An: close to the old town, with a pool.
- Ho Chi Minh City: the central district, near taxis.
How can you adjust it?
For eight days, drop one Hoi An night and the Day 9 outing. For more time, add a second night on the bay. Our guides on Central Vietnam with kids and South Vietnam with kids go further.
What should you book ahead?
- Flights, first, since school dates fix everything else.
- A boat on Ha Long Bay with child life jackets.
- Hands-on classes, so the children are not turned away.
- Halal meal stops, checked in advance with a displayed certificate.
What will it cost?
Price it in lines: flights for each person, internal flights, four bases, tickets, classes and meals. Children’s prices vary, so ask each provider. Put current quotes in the trip budget builder to see the total. Then run the plan through the travel-day checker and browse more itineraries.
If you share your children's ages and your school-holiday dates, we can check whether the bay, Hoi An and Saigon fit your window and where to add a spare half-day.
Common questions
Is Vietnam suitable for school-age children?
Yes, from the age when children can walk a morning and sit through a flight. Choose bases with short walks and hands-on activities, keep midday for rest, and avoid back-to-back long transfers. Younger children need a pushchair-friendly route; our guide for toddlers covers that.
How do we fit this into the school holidays?
Check your school's dates first, then check Vietnam's calendar. Tet is a week-long public holiday, and local families travel then. National Day on 2 September can stretch to a four-day break. Book flights and rooms early if your dates overlap.
How much time do we spend on the road?
Very little, by design. There are two internal flights, one road transfer to the bay and short car rides to and from airports. Each travel day has nothing big planned beside it. Use our travel-day checker to test any changes you make.
Which activities do children enjoy most?
Things they can do themselves: a cooking class, a lantern workshop, a bicycle ride through paddy edges, a boat trip and kayaking in the bay. Choose by weather and the child's confidence in water. Tunnels at Cu Chi can feel tight, so let children decide.
What if a child gets sick or tired on the trip?
Keep one spare half-day in the plan, and pack a small first-aid kit with usual medicines. Know the ambulance number and your insurer's helpline. Drink bottled or boiled water and wash hands before meals. A light day beats a rushed one.
