Vietnam for Culture: Four Historic Cities
A heritage route for people who want to understand the places, not only photograph them.
This route links four cities that each tell a different chapter of Vietnam’s story. Twelve days lets you spend a morning at each major site and rest by midday. We have placed the long days and the rest days with care, so the trip stays about understanding, not tick-boxes.
Who is this route for?
It suits curious travellers who prefer museums, citadels, old houses and temples to beaches and nightlife. It is also a good second trip for those who covered the headline sights before and want more depth.
Hanoi is served from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. You can fly home from Ho Chi Minh City, which is listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2. That open-jaw pair removes any backtracking.
The route at a glance
- Days 1 to 4: Hanoi, for the old citadel, the Old Quarter and museums.
- Days 5 and 6: Hue, for the imperial city and the tombs.
- Days 7 to 9: Hoi An, for the old town and My Son.
- Days 10 and 11: Ho Chi Minh City, for the modern south and its history.
- Day 12: fly home.
Day by day
Days 1 to 4: Hanoi
Hanoi is the oldest layer. Construction of the Thang Long citadel began in 1010 under Emperor Ly Thai To3, and its central sector was inscribed in 20104. Give this site your best morning.
Use the other days for the Old Quarter, a museum or two, and a calm afternoon beside the lake. Add a day trip only if you still have energy on Day 4. Pace matters here, because the city is loud and the heat builds by midday.
Days 5 and 6: Hue
Hue was the capital of unified Vietnam from 1802 under Emperor Gia Long5. Its monuments joined the World Heritage List in 19936. Hue’s own airport has no direct international routes7, and the nearest international airport is Da Nang, 80 km south of Phu Bai8.
Spend Day 5 arriving and walking the river. Go to the Imperial City on Day 6 when it opens. Hours were listed as 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM in the dry season, and 7 AM to 5 PM in the rainy season, on a third-party page9. Confirm both before you go.
An adult ticket was listed at 200,000 VND, about RM32 at Bank Negara’s rate on 15 October 20261011. Prices and rates change, so check again closer to your date.
Days 7 to 9: Hoi An
Travel from Hue to Hoi An by private car on Day 7, and let the Hai Van leg be your scenic stop. Hoi An Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 199912. Its Japanese bridge is a wooden bridge about 10 m long, built at the start of the 17th century13.
Day 8 is for the old houses and assembly halls in the cool of the morning. On Day 9, visit My Son, which was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 199914. Its Hindu temples were built between the 4th and 13th centuries by the kings of Champa15. It lies about 36 km south of Hoi An16, so go early.
Days 10 and 11: Ho Chi Minh City
Take a morning flight on Day 10 and keep the afternoon light. Day 11 can be a museum morning and a market afternoon, or a half-day at Ben Dinh, the Cu Chi site closer to the city with reconstructed tunnels17. Saigon Central Mosque, completed in 193518, is a useful anchor if prayer stops matter.
Day 12: fly home
Keep the morning free and leave for the airport with time to spare.
Where is the rest day?
It sits on Day 4 in Hanoi and Day 9 in Hoi An, where site fatigue builds. Treat them as free mornings, and swap them for a sight only if you feel fresh. Heritage trips tire the mind as much as the legs.
Where should you base yourself?
Choose areas, not hotel names.
- Hanoi: the Old Quarter for walking, or near the lake for quiet.
- Hue: the river side, within reach of the citadel.
- Hoi An: close to the old town for evenings, or toward the beach for rest.
- Ho Chi Minh City: the central district.
How can you adjust it?
For ten days, drop My Son and one Hanoi night. For slower travellers or seniors, add a night in Hue so the Imperial City is not rushed. In the rainy months on the central coast, which start from August to September and peak in October to November19, keep museums and covered markets as a backup. Our guide Hue or Hanoi for history helps with trade-offs.
What should you book ahead?
- Flights, and the Hanoi to central flight.
- A private car for the Hue to Hoi An leg and My Son.
- Halal meal stops, checked with a displayed certificate and a named issuer.
- A guide for the Imperial City, if you want the stories behind the walls.
What will it cost?
Price it in lines: flights, internal flights, four bases, a car, tickets, meals and extras. Rates change by season, so enter current quotes in the trip budget builder. For a version with no culture focus, see Vietnam 14 days: adding Sapa, Hue and the Mekong. Open Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An to compare the stops, or browse all itineraries.

Common questions
Is twelve days enough for four heritage cities?
Yes, if you keep one major site a day and accept that you will not see everything. Twelve days gives Hanoi four nights, Hue two, Hoi An three and Saigon two. With fewer days, drop Saigon or compress Hoi An.
Do we need a night in Hue?
For a culture trip, yes. The Imperial City is large, and the tombs reward a slow second morning. A day trip leaves little time to rest between sights. Our Hue guide helps you weigh the overnight against a rushed visit.
What is the best order for these cities?
North to south follows the history in time: the old capital, the Nguyen court, the trading port, then the modern south. It also moves from cooler to warmer in the dry months. A reverse route works equally well if your flight is cheaper into Saigon.
Is this route suitable for return visitors?
Yes, because it goes deeper into each place instead of repeating the headline sights. Add My Son for ruins and swap one famous site for a smaller museum or temple. If you did Hanoi before, give it fewer nights.
How do we handle the heat and humidity?
Visit sites early, rest through midday and walk again in the evening. Carry water, wear a hat, and avoid stacking two big outdoor sites in one afternoon. In the wet months, keep museums and covered markets ready as a backup.
