Vietnam for Photographers: Terraces to Delta

A route that puts the right landscape in front of your lens at the right hour and month.

This twelve-day route covers terraced mountains, limestone bays, an old town and a river delta, in an order that follows the weather. The key idea is to plan around light and season, not the clock. Dawn and dusk go to the best landscapes, and middays are for rest and editing.

Who is this route for?

It suits photographers who want variety: mist and mountains, boats on water, lanterns and old houses, and river life. It also suits travelling companions who prefer to walk slowly while you shoot.

Hanoi is served from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. You can fly home from Ho Chi Minh City, which is listed with Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia2.

The route at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Hanoi.
  • Days 2 to 4: Sapa, for mountains, mist and villages.
  • Days 5 and 6: Ha Long Bay, for a night on the water.
  • Day 7: fly to the centre and move to Hoi An.
  • Days 8 and 9: Hoi An, for the old town and the rice fields.
  • Days 10 and 11: the Mekong Delta, for boats and markets.
  • Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City and your flight home.

Which months suit which landscape?

Use the climate facts to choose your window. Sapa gets 2,000 to 2,500 mm of rain a year, mostly April to September3. Its coldest month is January, averaging 8.7 C, and its warmest is July at 19.9 C4.

On the central coast, the rainy season starts August to September and peaks October to November5. In the north delta, the rainy season starts April to May, peaks July to August and ends October to November6. Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly May to November and a dry season from December to April7.

No single month is dry everywhere. If your leave falls in a wet month, keep your terrace days flexible and add a covered backup, such as old houses and markets. See our Vietnam weather by month guide.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Hanoi

Keep it light. Check in, walk the Old Quarter at golden hour and sleep early for a morning train or car.

Days 2 to 4: Sapa

Sapa is approximately 300 km northwest of Hanoi in Lao Cai province8. The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km, single-track metre gauge9. Plan most of Day 2 for the move and shoot only at dusk.

Day 3 is for the valley trails and the villages, at first light.

Our Sapa trekking guide covers routes and footwear. Fansipan is 3,147.3 m high and is Vietnam’s highest peak10. The cable car is 6.3 km long11, and the listed hours are 07:30 AM to 05:00 PM, which may change12. Mist can hide the summit, so keep your hour flexible.

Day 4 is for a slow morning and the return to Hanoi. If rice terraces are your main goal, read our Mu Cang Chai guide, because the timing matters more than the distance.

Days 5 and 6: Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay was inscribed in 199413. Take a night on the water for dawn and dusk, rather than a day boat that spends midday at the best viewpoints. Ask whether the cruise visits at sunrise.

Day 7: fly to the centre

Take a morning flight to Da Nang and move to Hoi An, which lies some 28 km south of Da Nang14. Shoot only the evening lanterns.

Days 8 and 9: Hoi An

Hoi An Ancient Town joined the World Heritage List in 199915. Shoot the yellow walls at dawn, before the crowds. Cycle through the paddy edges in the afternoon light, and use the middle of the day for rest. Our Hang Mua Viewpoint guide covers a sunrise viewpoint and its timing.

Days 10 and 11: the Mekong Delta

Fly to Ho Chi Minh City on Day 10 and move on to the delta. Spend Day 11 in a small boat at first light, when the river markets and the fruit boats are at their busiest. See our Mekong Delta guide for how many days to give it.

Day 12: fly home

Return to Ho Chi Minh City, back up your cards and fly home.

Where should you base yourself?

Choose areas, not hotel names.

  • Sapa: a room with a valley view, within walking distance of the trailhead.
  • Ha Long Bay: a boat with a deck for dawn.
  • Hoi An: close to the old town, for sunrise walks.
  • Mekong Delta: a riverside stay, near the boat landing.

How can you adjust it?

For ten days, drop the Mekong. For more time, add a second night in Sapa for a clearer morning. Our guide on northern areas for photography compares the options.

What should you book ahead?

  • Flights, and the Sapa transport.
  • A boat with sunrise access on Ha Long Bay.
  • A local guide for villages, because a guide opens doors.
  • Spare batteries and cards, packed in your hand luggage.

What will it cost?

Price it in lines: flights, internal flights, four bases, transport and guides. Prices change by season, so use the trip budget builder with current quotes. Browse more itineraries, and open Sapa and Ha Long Bay for the two northern stops.

Common questions

Which month is best for photography in Vietnam?

It depends on the region, so no single month fits all four. Sapa is wettest from April to September, central Vietnam is wettest from August to November, and the south has its dry season from December to April. Pick the region that matters most and fit the others around it.

How much gear should I carry?

Less than you think. One body, a wide lens, a mid zoom and a small tripod cover most of this route. Add a rain cover and silica gel for the humid months. A drone may need permission; check the rules before you pack it.

What is the best light for each place?

Dawn and the hour before sunset for the bay and the old town. Early morning for the Mekong's boats and markets. Early light for Sapa's mist and valleys. Midday is flat almost everywhere, so use it to rest or edit.

Is the route too tiring with a camera bag?

It can be. Keep the bag light, use a small rucksack on trek days, and split your gear between hotel and day pack. Sapa's trails need good footwear. Our trekking guide for beginners explains routes and guides.

Can I shoot people and markets respectfully?

Yes. Ask before photographing a person, especially in village homes, and offer to show them the picture. Avoid blocking narrow lanes at the market. Buy something small when you take up a stall holder's time. A smile and a nod open more doors than a big lens.
