Cao Bang: Border Highlands and Waterfall Country

Cao Bang is far, quiet and rewarding for those who plan for distance.

Cao Bang is a remote border region in the far northeast, known for Ban Gioc Waterfall, karst hills and caves. It rewards photographers and return visitors who plan for long road legs. For a short first trip, an easier northern stop is a better use of leave.

What is Cao Bang?

Cao Bang is a province on the border with China, reached by road from Hanoi. It is rural, with winding roads, limestone hills, small towns and fields.

The north has four seasons1, so the weather changes through the year. Pack layers, and expect mist and rain to affect views.

Who will enjoy Cao Bang most?

Photographers, return visitors and travellers who prefer quiet and open scenery to famous crowds. It suits those happy with simple rooms and long drives.

If you have only a few days or travel with toddlers, choose a closer northern stop. Read classic or off-the-beaten-path North Vietnam.

What is there to see?

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall: a wide border waterfall that is the region’s best-known sight. See Ban Gioc Waterfall.
  • Caves: limestone caves reached by short walks.
  • Karst landscape: rolling hills, rice fields and river valleys.
  • Small towns and markets: a glimpse of local life.

How long should you give it?

Give it a few days beyond your Hanoi stay, because the road legs are long. A rushed visit leaves you in the car more than at the sights.

On short leave, compare with a closer option in Cao Bang or Ha Giang.

When should you go?

Weather shapes the scenery. The waterfall is fuller after rain, but wet weather makes roads slippery and views misty. Check Vietnam weather by month before you fix dates.

Allow a spare day in case of landslides or road delays.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Fly into Hanoi, then travel by road to Cao Bang. Plan most of a day for the leg, and do not stack it with a flight. For arrival options, read KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.

A private car with a driver gives you the most control. Read why remote regions need a private tour.

How do you get around?

Roads are the only way. Grab operates in Vietnam2, but not in this region. Hire a driver for the whole stay.

What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?

For toddlers and seniors, the long road legs and basic rooms are the main concern. See remote regions for seniors.

Halal choices are very limited here. Bring snacks, plan meals with your operator, and look for a displayed certificate and who issued it.

When is another place a better choice?

If you want a famous mountain loop, read Ha Giang. For an easier northern trip, compare Ha Giang or Sapa. Browse more in Regions and where to go.

Common questions

Is Cao Bang worth the long journey?

It is for photographers and return visitors who want waterfalls, caves and quiet roads. The sights are spread out and the road legs are long. For a short first trip, a closer northern stop is easier.

How is Cao Bang different from Ha Giang?

Cao Bang is calmer and less known, centred on Ban Gioc Waterfall, caves and rolling karst country. Ha Giang is more dramatic, with a famous road loop. Cao Bang suits those who prefer waterfalls and fewer crowds to winding passes.

Is Cao Bang suitable for seniors?

Only with a private car and lots of rest. The distances are long and facilities are simple. If a parent tires on long drives, choose an easier northern base. Our guide for seniors on remote regions explains what to check.
