Fansipan: Cable Car, Train or Trek

Pick your Fansipan route by effort and cloud risk, and keep a plan B for a hidden peak.

Fansipan is Vietnam’s highest peak, and the cable car makes the summit possible for most groups. Choose it for short leave, seniors or children. Treks suit fit travellers with a guide and time to spare. Cloud can hide the view whichever route you choose, so keep a plan B.

What is Fansipan and where is it?

Fansipan is 3,147.3 m high and is Vietnam’s highest peak1. It stands near Sapa, which is approximately 300 km north-west of Hanoi in Lao Cai province2.

The cable car is 6.3 km long, a Guinness World Record for longest nonstop three-rope cable car, inaugurated in February 20163. A funicular, a small train on a slope, also serves parts of the route. Ask what is running when you book.

When should you go?

Sapa’s annual mean temperature is 15.3 C, with January averaging 8.7 C and July 19.9 C4. The record low is minus 6.1 C, and snowfall can occur5. The summit is colder than the town.

Sapa gets 2,000 to 2,500 mm of rain a year, mostly April to September6. Wet months bring more cloud, so clear views are less certain. Dry, cold months can offer clearer mornings but need warmer clothes.

What are the opening hours?

Sun World lists open time as 07:30 AM to 05:00 PM and notes hours may change7. The cable car has scheduled maintenance closures. A Sun World notice dated 28 September 2026 said the cable car resumed operation after inspection and maintenance8. Check before you book.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Fly to Hanoi. Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air9. The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km, single-track metre gauge10, and visitors can take the night train or a road transfer to Sapa.

Plan most of a day for the transfer. For a base, read Sapa town.

What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?

Seniors and children should dress in layers and avoid queuing in the wind. Pick a clear morning and allow rest stops. If anyone has heart or breathing trouble, ask a doctor first. For stay ideas, read Sapa stay areas for seniors.

Food at the summit is limited. Carry snacks, and read Mountain bases and halal food before you go.

What if the summit is hidden?

Keep a flexible morning and a short list of backups: Sapa town cafes, a gentle valley walk or Cat Cat Village. Do not spend the whole day waiting for the cloud to lift. Try again later in the day or on the next morning if your plan allows.

Common questions

Should I take the cable car or trek Fansipan?

Take the cable car if you have short leave, travel with seniors or children, or want a lower-risk day. Trek only if you are fit, have a guide and can spare one or two days. The cable car still involves a climb at the top, so check the stairs and lift options.

What if clouds hide the summit?

It happens enough that you should plan for it. Check the forecast and the hour before you go, and keep a flexible morning. If the summit is hidden, spend the time on Sapa town cafes, Cat Cat Village or a gentle valley walk, then try again if your plan allows.

How cold is it at the top of Fansipan?

Much colder than Malaysia, and colder than Sapa town. Bring layers, a windproof jacket, a hat and gloves, even in warm months. Wet weather makes it feel harsher. Elderly travellers and children should have an extra layer, since waiting in a queue in wind chills quickly.

Is Fansipan suitable for seniors and toddlers?

The cable car can be, with care. The ride itself is easy, but the summit is cold and involves stairs, with a lift option you should confirm. Toddlers need warm clothing and a plan for naps. If anyone has heart or breathing trouble, ask a doctor before going up.

Can Muslim travellers eat well around Fansipan?

Plan ahead. Food at the top is limited and Sapa town has few choices for Muslim diners. Carry snacks and ask about pork and cooking oil if you eat in town. Pork-free is not the same as holding a halal certificate. Our mountain food guide lists what to check before you go.
