Mui Ne

Mui Ne Sand Dunes: Red or White

Early light is kind to photos and to legs, so plan the dunes around the sun.

Mui Ne has two main dune areas, the red and the white. Go for sunrise or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the sand is cooler. Choose the white dunes for scale and photos, and the red dunes for an easy, short family stop.

What are the Mui Ne sand dunes?

They are coastal dunes shaped by wind, a short drive from the Mui Ne resort strip near Phan Thiet. The sand changes colour with the light, from pale yellow to deep orange. Most of the visit is walking, sliding or riding a jeep across the open ground.

For the wider area, read our Mui Ne guide and the notes on Phan Thiet.

Which are better, the red dunes or the white dunes?

The white dunes are larger and emptier, so they feel more like a real desert. The red dunes are smaller, sit closer to the resort area and are easier to reach.

If your group includes grandparents or toddlers, the red dunes are the gentler pick. Photographers and friends who like adventure should lean towards the white dunes at sunrise.

When should you go for light and heat?

Sunrise gives long shadows, cool sand and fewer people. The hour before sunset is the second-best time, and it works well for the red dunes.

Midday is the hardest hour. The sand reflects heat and bare feet suffer, so avoid it with children and seniors. Mui Ne sits in the south, where the rainy season starts in May1, so check the forecast if you travel after that.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

You can fly to Ho Chi Minh City on AirAsia from Johor Bahru2, then continue by road to Mui Ne. Our guide on Mui Ne as a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City shows whether a day trip is realistic.

For a better pace, sleep at least one night in Mui Ne so you can catch sunrise.

How do the jeep tours work?

Jeep tours usually combine the sunrise or sunset dunes, a stop at a small lake and a fishing harbour. Ask which stops are included and how long you stay at each one. Agree the price and the pick-up time before you go.

Some places rent plastic sheets for sliding down the sand. This is fun for children, though it is tiring on the climb back up.

What should families and seniors know?

Sand is hard going with a stroller, so use a carrier or choose the red dunes. Seniors can stay by the jeep and watch the light instead of climbing.

Bring water, hats and sun protection, and cover mouths and eyes when wind picks up.

When is another place a better choice?

If you want the calm of a shallow stream, the Fairy Stream nearby is easier on small legs. If you want a quiet beach day, the resort strip itself may be enough.

Common questions

Should you see the red dunes or the white dunes?

If you only have time for one, choose by what you want. The white dunes are larger and feel like a desert, so they suit photographers and teenagers. The red dunes are smaller and closer to the resorts, so they suit families, grandparents and a short stop. A jeep tour usually links both.

What is the best time of day for the dunes?

Sunrise and the hour before sunset give the softest light and the coolest sand. Midday is harsh, and sand can burn bare feet. If you are travelling with children or elders, take the early slot, finish before the heat builds and rest at your hotel after lunch.

What should you wear and bring?

Wear light, covering clothes, a hat and sunglasses, and bring a scarf to cover your face against blowing sand. Closed shoes or sandals with straps are better than flip-flops. Protect your camera with a bag or cloth, and carry water. Muslim travellers may like a long scarf for both modesty and sand.
