Tay Ho (West Lake): Quiet Hanoi Stay Area

After a loud first day, a lake and a wide road can feel like relief.

Stay in Tay Ho if a calm evening matters more to you than walking to the sights. The area sits beside West Lake, with wider roads, cafes and far less street noise than the Old Quarter. The price of that peace is a Grab ride to almost everything you want to see.

What is Tay Ho?

Tay Ho is the district around West Lake, Hanoi’s large lake north of the centre. Its name simply means West Lake.

The area has a relaxed feel. You will find lakeside roads, cafes, small restaurants and a good number of serviced apartments and boutique hotels. Our Hanoi city guide shows how it sits against the other districts.

Who enjoys Tay Ho most?

Slow couples and older travellers get the most from it. If your idea of a good evening is a lake walk and an early night, it fits well.

It also suits repeat visitors who have already done the main sights and want a gentler stay. It suits first-timers on a tight schedule less well, because each outing starts with a ride.

How many days should you give it?

Two or three nights work well when you plan one outing a day and spend the rest of the time by the lake. For a single night, a central base saves you time.

Some travellers split a longer stay. Spend the first night where you land, then move to the lake once you want rest.

When should you go?

The hottest month in Hanoi is July at a mean of 29.2 C, and the coolest is January at 16.4 C1. January evenings by the water can feel cold, so bring a light jacket.

June and August are the wettest months2. A cafe by the lake is a pleasant rainy-day plan, but keep a ride booked for the sights.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi is listed as served by AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air3. Check the airline sites for current schedules.

Noi Bai Airport is about 35 km north-east of downtown4. Arrange a pick-up or use Grab, especially after a late flight.

What is there to do?

Keep your plans light and let the lake set the pace.

  • Lakeside walks and cycling: quiet at dawn and at sunset.
  • Cafes and brunch spots: a calm place to rest between outings.
  • Pagodas and temples near the water: short visits that suit a slow morning.
  • Day trip into the centre: Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter lanes by Grab.

How do you get around?

Plan on Grab for most trips. Grab operates in Vietnam5, and it keeps the day simple when you leave the lake.

Group your sightseeing so you go into town once, spend the day there and come back in the evening. Our guide on walkable or taxi-reliant Hanoi explains how to plan for each.

What about families, seniors and Muslim travellers?

For seniors, the calmer pavements and quieter nights are the big gain. Choose a hotel with a lift and a flat entrance, and see our advice in where to stay in Hanoi for seniors.

With toddlers, the lake offers space to walk, but you are far from the central food streets, so plan meals and nap times around the ride.

For Muslim travellers, Al-Noor Mosque on Hang Luoc Street was built between 1885 and 1890 and holds about 200 people6. It is in the Old Quarter area, so plan a ride for prayers. Confirm prayer times with the mosque, and ask to see a halal certificate and who issued it before you eat anywhere.

When is another area better?

If you want to walk to dinner and have only a night or two, the Old Quarter puts everything on your doorstep. For calm streets that stay close to the lake and the sights, look at the Hanoi French Quarter.

How does it fit a route?

Tay Ho works as a rest stop at the end of a busy trip, or as a calm base before a day out to Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay. Use the Vietnam trip budget builder to price your nights with current quotes, and browse more areas in Cities and where to stay.

Tell us your dates, who is travelling and how much sightseeing you want, and we can say whether a lakeside base suits you or whether a central street is the smarter choice.

Common questions

Is Tay Ho a good place to stay in Hanoi?

It is a good choice if you value calm evenings, wide roads and lake views over being within walking distance of the sights. You will take Grab to most places. Slow couples and older travellers usually find the trade fair, while first-timers on a very short trip may prefer the centre.

How far is Tay Ho from the Old Quarter?

It sits north of the centre, so you need a ride rather than a stroll. Grab is the easy way, and you can build your day around one trip in and one trip back. Ask your hotel for a rough travel time at the hour you plan to leave, because traffic changes it.

Is Tay Ho suitable for elderly parents?

Usually yes, because the pace is gentler and pavements near the lake are easier than in the crowded lanes. Check that the hotel has a lift and a flat entrance, and plan one main outing a day with a rest after lunch. Use Grab for every longer leg.

Can Muslim travellers eat well around Tay Ho?

Plan ahead. Cafes and restaurants here are varied, but never assume a place is halal. Look for a displayed certificate and ask who issued it, or choose a Muslim-owned place and ask about the kitchen. Al-Noor Mosque is in the Old Quarter area, so allow a ride for prayers there.
