Visiting Ethnic Minority Villages in Northern Vietnam Respectfully
Highland villages are homes first, so a few clear habits keep your visit kind to residents.
Visit highland villages as a guest, not as an audience: ask before you photograph, spend money where it reaches families and choose a homestay that the host family runs. Sapa and Ha Giang make this easy to plan once you know what to ask.
Where do these village visits happen?
Sa Pa is approximately 300 km north-west of Hanoi, in Lao Cai province1. Villages sit in the valleys around it; our Sapa town guide and the page on Ta Van village describe what staying there is like. Ha Giang lies further north; see Ha Giang: loop country and who should go.
How should you ask before taking photos?
Use three steps every time:
- Greet first. A smile and a hello change how the request is received.
- Ask by showing your camera and raising your eyebrows. Wait for a clear yes.
- Share the photo on your screen if the person wants to see it, and thank them.
If someone turns away, respect it. For children, ask a parent first. Do not follow someone to get a shot, and do not photograph inside a home without being invited.
How do you spend money in a way that helps?
Spend where the money reaches the family. Buy handicrafts directly from the maker, eat at a family-run place and tip your guide and host for good service. Do not give sweets, coins or pens to children; it encourages begging and does not help the child.
If something looks like a staged performance with a fee, ask how the money is shared. A fair answer is easy to give.
How do you choose a homestay or village tour?
Ask the supplier before paying:
- Who owns the homestay, and where does the guest’s money go?
- Are the guides from the local community?
- What are the sleeping, bathroom and meal arrangements?
- How many guests share the house at once?
- What are the quiet hours and house rules?
Basic stays suit some travellers and not others. Our guide on Sapa town hotel versus a remote valley stay helps you decide.
What about conduct in the village?
Dress modestly, keep your voice low and stay on the paths. Remove your shoes where the host does. Leave no litter. For fuller habits at temples, villages and markets, read responsible sightseeing basics.
What is the next step?
Decide how much village time you want, then ask suppliers the homestay questions above. For wider booking help, see Booking and travelling well. If you cannot decide between the two northern mountain areas, Ha Giang or Sapa compares them.

Common questions
Do I need permission before photographing villagers?
Yes, ask every time. A smile and a gesture toward your camera is enough if you share no language. If the answer is no or unclear, put the camera down. Be extra careful with children and elders, and never follow someone to get a shot.
Should I give money or sweets to children?
Please do not. Handing out sweets or coins teaches children to ask visitors and can harm their teeth and school attendance. A better way to help is to buy a handmade item from a seller, or to choose a homestay or guide arranged through the community.
How should I tip in a village?
Tip your guide and host as you would elsewhere, in cash and with a smile, if service was good. Ask your tour company beforehand what is included, so you do not tip twice. Buying handicrafts directly from the maker is another fair way to support the family.
How do I choose a homestay?
Ask who owns it, who the guests' money goes to and what the host provides. A homestay run by the family usually benefits them more than a package where the village is only a stop. Ask about bathrooms, bedding and meals so there are no surprises.
