Where to Sleep on Your First Night in Vietnam
Landing late with children or tired parents: airport hotel or straight to your city base?
If you land late and are travelling with young children or tired parents, sleep near the airport. If you land in the evening with energy, go straight to your city base. The right answer depends on your landing time and who is travelling, not on how nice the hotel looks.

For Hanoi, Noi Bai (code HAN2) is about 35 km from downtown1. Plan a proper ride into the city, not a quick hop. In Ho Chi Minh City, traffic decides the time of the ride.
How do you decide by landing time?
Flight times are shown in local time, and Vietnam uses UTC+7 all year3. Check the clock difference when you read your ticket.
- Landing before the evening: go straight to your base and use the rest of the day.
- Landing in the evening: go straight in if everyone is awake and fed.
- Landing near midnight or after: choose the airport night, particularly with children.
- Landing before sunrise: ask about early check-in, or book the night before.
What is the better night for families and elders?
A child who sleeps in the car is easier to manage than one who is awake and cranky at midnight. Even so, a long ride followed by a tricky check-in tires everyone. When in doubt, shorten the first night: sleep close, rest, and leave for the city after breakfast.

Common questions
Should we sleep near the airport after a late arrival?
If you land close to midnight with small children, a hotel near the airport can be kinder than an hour in a car. You skip a long transfer and sleep sooner. If you land in the evening and have energy, going straight to your city base is better.
What if our flight lands very early in the morning?
Ask your hotel about early check-in before you fly, and book the previous night if you want a room right away. Otherwise plan to leave bags at the hotel and spend the morning slowly. A quiet breakfast and a short walk work better than a full programme.
Do I need to arrange the airport transfer before landing?
Yes, it removes the worst part of arrival. Agree the pickup with your hotel, or know which app or counter you will use. Confirm the hotel address in Vietnamese script, so the driver can read it, and keep your hotel phone number handy.
Is it safe to arrive late at night with children?
Late arrivals are tiring for everyone, so slow down. Use a pre-arranged pickup, avoid unknown offers inside the terminal and head straight to your room. Keep your passports and valuables in your hand luggage.
