Pick it in one case: you land very late, you leave very early and you will not go out. You skip two long rides and sleep close to the gate.
It also helps if one traveller is unwell or if a young child will not cope with another long ride. That is a real reason, not a lazy one.

In almost every other case. A night in the Old Quarter gives you a meal, a walk and a first look at Hanoi. If you are travelling on short leave, that evening is a large share of your Hanoi time.

Common questions
Is it worth sleeping near Noi Bai airport?
Only in narrow cases: a very late landing with a very early onward flight, or a long wait between flights when you will not go out. If you have even one free evening, the city gives you far more for the same night. Compare the real transfer.
How far is Noi Bai from the city?
Noi Bai is a long way out, so the transfer is part of your day. A public bus, taxi or ride-hailing car all reach the centre. Plan for the ride on both arrival and departure, and leave a generous gap before your flight.
What if my flight lands very late?
Message a city hotel to confirm reception is staffed after midnight and that they will hold your room. A booked car is easier than a bus at that hour. If you only need sleep and leave at dawn, an airport hotel can make sense.
Can I take the bus with luggage?
Yes, the airport has a public bus to the Old Quarter. Luggage space is limited, and it suits light packers who are not tired. With children, elders or heavy bags, a booked car is calmer. Check current fares and timings on the day.
