Short stay

Short Stopover in Hanoi: Where to Sleep

One or two nights between flights is enough for Hanoi if you sleep in the right place.

For a one or two night stop in Hanoi, sleep in the Old Quarter if you land by evening and want a walk and a meal. If your flight lands very late or leaves before dawn, pick a place with staffed reception and a simple route to the road. Let your flight times choose the area, not the sights.

How do flight times decide the area?

Start with the two times you cannot change: when you land and when you leave.

  • Landing in the afternoon or early evening: the Old Quarter. You can walk out for a meal and a short loop.
  • Landing late at night: any area with staffed reception, confirmed in writing.
  • Leaving early morning: a hotel where a car can stop at the door.
  • Leaving late evening: stay central, check out, and keep a bag at reception for the day.

Kuala Lumpur has direct flights to Hanoi. The route is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Check current schedules on the airline sites.

How far is the airport, really?

Noi Bai is about 35 km northeast of downtown Hanoi2. Treat the transfer as a real part of your day, not a detail.

Public bus 86 serves the Old Quarter and Hanoi Railway Station from the terminals, listed at 45,000 Vietnamese dong (VND) when we checked3. Confirm the fare. Late at night or with young children, a booked car is easier than waiting at a stop.

What should you message the hotel?

Send these before you pay:

  • Is reception staffed after midnight on my landing date?
  • Can you arrange a car to the airport at (time), and what does it cost?
  • Can we leave our bags after check-out?
  • Is the entrance on a main lane or inside an alley?

Keep the replies. They save you arguing at the desk when you are tired.

What can you fit into one full day?

If you have a full day between flights, keep it light. Walk the Old Quarter, take a slow loop around the lake and have one proper meal. Add one site only if it is close to your hotel.

For longer outings, read short breaks near Hanoi and decide whether a day trip is worth the road. Our travel-day checker shows how much of your day each transfer takes.

Compare a hotel near the airport with one in town in staying near Noi Bai versus the city. If this is your first time in Hanoi, where to stay in Hanoi on a first visit gives the longer decision path. More choices sit in Cities and where to stay.

Common questions

Is one night in Hanoi worth it?

Yes, if you plan it as an evening and a morning. Land, eat near your hotel, sleep and use the next morning for one walk before heading out. You will not see the city, but you will taste it. Two nights lets you add a heritage site without rushing.

Which area is best for a late arrival?

Choose an area where the hotel has staffed reception and you can reach it without a long search for the entrance. The Old Quarter is the usual choice for food and walking, but lanes can be narrow in the dark. Confirm check-in after midnight by message first.

What about an early morning flight out?

Stay where a taxi or ride-hailing car can reach the hotel door, and book the ride the evening before. Pack before dinner and settle the bill the night before if the hotel allows. Leave a generous gap, because the airport is a long ride out.

Should I sleep near the airport instead?

Only if the flight is very early or very late and you will not leave the hotel. If you want even one evening of Hanoi, the city is better. Our airport versus city guide sets out the trade-off.
