Hanoi First Visit: Where to Stay

Choosing a Hanoi area before you book is easier when you start from how you like to travel.

For a first Hanoi stay, choose the Old Quarter if you want food and street life at your door. Choose the French Quarter if you want the same city with calmer pavements. Choose Tay Ho if you prefer lake views and quiet evenings and do not mind a ride into town.

All three work. They suit different travellers, so start with how you like to spend a day.

Which Hanoi area fits how you travel?

Answer three questions: how much noise can you sleep through, how much do you want to walk, and how many nights do you have?

If you are still undecided, our Old Quarter versus other stay areas guide compares them side by side.

Why does the area matter in a city this size?

Hanoi covers 3,358.6 km2 and has about 8.7 million people1. A place that looks close on the map can still be a slow ride in evening traffic.

So the area you pick decides how much of your short leave goes on the road. Sleeping close to what you want to see is the simplest way to save time.

What is it like to sleep in the Old Quarter?

It is lively, close to everything and loud. Motorbikes and street sellers start early, and some lanes stay busy late. Your room position matters more than the star rating.

We explain how to read a street and ask for a quieter floor in how to pick a quiet Old Quarter room.

What about the first and last day?

Noi Bai airport is about 35 km northeast of downtown Hanoi2. That is a real transfer, not a short hop.

Public bus 86 links the terminals with the Old Quarter and Hanoi Railway Station, listed at 45,000 Vietnamese dong (VND) when we checked3. Confirm the fare before you go. If your flight lands late, a private car or ride-hailing may be easier with luggage.

What should you check before you book?

  • The street the room faces, and whether the entrance is down a narrow alley.
  • Whether there is a lift, if anyone in your group finds stairs hard.
  • How you will reach the airport on departure day.
  • Whether your area suits the day trips you plan.

Then work out the cost in ringgit with the trip budget builder. More city advice sits in Cities and where to stay.

Common questions

Is the Old Quarter a good first choice in Hanoi?

Yes, if you like walking to food and sights and can live with street noise. Everything is close, so you spend less leave in transit. If you sleep lightly or travel with older parents, ask for a room away from the main road, or look at the French Quarter instead.

Which Hanoi area is calmest for a first visit?

The French Quarter and Tay Ho are calmer than the Old Quarter. The French Quarter has wider pavements and is still walkable. Tay Ho is lakeside and quiet in the evening but sits further from the main sights, so expect rides into the centre.

How many nights should a first stay in Hanoi be?

Two to three nights lets you see the Old Quarter, the lake and one heritage site without rushing. If you add Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay as day trips, add a night so you are not packing every day. Short leave can still work with two nights.

Do I need to change area during one Hanoi stay?

Usually not. One base is simpler, because every move costs half a day with luggage. If you are torn between lively and quiet, pick the quieter area and walk or ride into the Old Quarter for dinner.

Is it easy to get from the airport to the city?

The airport is a long way out, so plan the transfer rather than leave it to chance. Taxis, ride-hailing and a public bus all run to the centre. Check the bus and car options in our airport guide before you land.
