Why is Bai Chay the usual choice?
Bai Chay is the tourist side of Ha Long City, and the boat piers are close. You can walk to dinner, sleep close to your boarding time and avoid a road leg on the morning of your cruise.
It is also the simplest option if your plan is a single day on the water. Ha Long Bay was inscribed by UNESCO in 19941, and is described as having 1,969 islets2. You will not see them all, so pick a route and a duration with the operator rather than the hotel.
When does Ha Long City make sense?
Other parts of Ha Long City feel more local, with fewer tourist restaurants. It suits you if you want a quieter street and do not mind a short ride to the boats. Confirm the pier name and check-in time before you book.
When does Cat Ba make sense?
Cat Ba is an island with a town, beaches and a national park, and it is a base for Lan Ha Bay. The 2023 UNESCO extension joined it to Ha Long Bay as the Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago1. You will travel by road, then by ferry or boat, so allow for it on arrival day.

How do you get there from Malaysia?
Fly to Hanoi and continue by road. Cat Bi airport in Haiphong lists no Malaysian airlines or destinations3, so Hanoi is the practical entry. Allow most of a day for the road and boat on your travel day.

Do I need a hotel if I am doing an overnight cruise?
Not for the cruise night. You sleep on the boat. You may still want a hotel the night before, because boats board at set times and a late road transfer from Hanoi can cut into your day. Ask the cruise operator what time check-in is, and plan the night before around that.
Is Bai Chay or Ha Long City better for a first visit?
Bai Chay is the usual choice because it is the tourist side of Ha Long City, with the boat piers and a long run of hotels and restaurants nearby. Staying elsewhere in the city can be quieter, but it adds a short ride to the boats every day.
Is Cat Ba good for young families?
It can be, if you want a slower island stay. Cat Ba has a town, beaches and national park, and it is the usual base for Lan Ha Bay. The catch is the extra boat or ferry leg to get there, which is tiring for a toddler. Plan it as a two-night stay at least.
Can I do Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?
