Hanoi to Hue Night Train: What to Expect
You want to reach Hue rested enough for the Imperial City, not lose a day to the journey.
The night train is a good fit for Hue if you sleep well on trains and want a morning that begins with the old capital, not a flight transfer. It arrives early, so your room may not be ready until later in the day. Ask about early check-in or a bag store before you go.
Why take the night train to Hue?
Hue’s airport has no direct international routes3. Travellers who fly in must land at Da Nang, which is 80 km south of Phu Bai4, then continue by road.
The night train avoids that. You board in Hanoi, sleep, and step off in Hue itself. For culture-seekers and return visitors, that is a neat way to start a heritage day.
Which cabin should you choose?
The main choice is soft sleeper or hard sleeper. A soft sleeper has fewer berths and softer bedding. A hard sleeper has more berths in the cabin. Our cabin classes guide shows the difference side by side.
Light sleepers and couples should lean towards soft. Budget travellers who sleep anywhere can choose hard.
What is the arrival like?
You arrive in the early morning, before normal hotel check-in. Message your hotel in advance and ask three things:
- Can we check in early?
- Can you hold our bags if the room is not ready?
- Is there a rest area or a breakfast room we can use?
Without a yes, have a plan: a slow breakfast, a walk by the river and a rest before the day properly begins.
How should you use the first morning?
Hue’s monuments were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 19931. The Imperial City hours were listed as 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM in the summer and dry season, and 7 AM to 5 PM in the winter and rainy season2. Confirm the hours before you go.
If you arrive early and feel rested, you can start at the Imperial City. If not, rest first and go in the afternoon. Our Hue guide and Hue as a day trip or overnight stop help you pace the stay.
What should you check before you book?
- The departure time and arrival time on your exact ticket.
- Your hotel’s early check-in and bag-store policy.
- Whether you will buy through the official site, dsvn.vn5, or an agent.
- Whether a flight to Da Nang and a road transfer would suit your group better.
Compare all three options in Hanoi to Hue: flight, train or night train. See Vietnam train booking for how to buy a ticket, and Getting around Vietnam for the wider picture.

Common questions
When does the night train reach Hue?
It arrives in the early morning, before hotel check-in time. Exact times depend on the train you book and the timetable that season, so confirm them when you buy the ticket. Plan the first morning around bags, breakfast and a slow start.
Can I check in early at my Hue hotel?
Sometimes. Early check-in is a request, not a right, and depends on whether the room is free. Message your hotel before you travel and ask for an early check-in, a bag store or a rest room, and ask them to put the answer in writing.
Which cabin should I choose for one night?
A soft sleeper has fewer berths and softer bedding, which suits light sleepers and couples. A hard sleeper has more berths in the cabin. Pick by how well you sleep. Our cabin class guide explains each plainly.
Is the night train a good idea for seniors?
It can work if the group can use lower berths and accepts a slow morning. Station platforms and steps need care, so allow extra time and ask the hotel for help with luggage. For stiff knees, a flight to Da Nang plus a road transfer may be easier.
