Soft or Hard Sleeper on a Vietnam Train

One night on the rails goes better when the berth matches who is sleeping in it.

Soft sleeper suits elders, light sleepers and families with children, because fewer people share the compartment. Hard sleeper suits couples and friends who want to save money and can sleep through some noise. For one night on a short leave, pick by who is sleeping, not by the price alone.

What is the difference between the two classes?

Both give you a lying-flat berth in a closed compartment. The difference is the number of people who share it and how much space each person gets.

A soft sleeper compartment holds fewer berths and the bedding is softer. A hard sleeper compartment packs in more berths, so you share the space with more strangers, and the bunks sit closer together.

Which class fits which traveller?

  • Grandparents or anyone with sore knees: soft sleeper, lower berths only.
  • Parents with young children: soft sleeper, so the family fills most of the compartment.
  • Budget couples and friends: hard sleeper, with a lower and middle berth if you can choose.
  • First-timers who worry about sleeping: soft sleeper for the first night, then decide.

Our guide to overnight trains and buses for seniors covers stairs, upper berths and toilet access in more detail.

How long is the ride, and does the class change that?

The class does not change the timetable. The full Reunification Express run takes about 30 hours, and express timetables run longer2. Most holidays use a shorter leg, such as Hanoi to Hue or the Hanoi to Da Nang sleeper.

The Hanoi to Lao Cai line, used for Sapa, is 296 km of single track3. Single track means waiting for trains to pass, so allow slack on arrival.

What should you check before you book?

  • The coach and class name on your ticket, not only the agent’s label.
  • Berth level: ask for lower berths if anyone is older or unsteady.
  • Whether the price includes bedding and a small snack or water.
  • Your arrival time, and where you will leave bags if the hotel room is not ready.

Common questions

Is soft sleeper worth the extra money?

For one night with older parents, light sleepers or children, usually yes. A soft sleeper compartment holds fewer people, so there is less noise, less climbing and a little more privacy. If you are two adults who sleep anywhere, the hard sleeper saves money that you can spend on a better hotel the next day.

Which berth is best for seniors?

Ask for lower berths. They need no climbing, the bed is at an easy height and the toilet trip is shorter. Upper berths mean a ladder and a narrow gap under the ceiling, which is hard on knees and backs. Tell the booking agent about mobility before you pay, not at the station.

Where do I check real prices and berth types?

The official Vietnam Railways booking site is dsvn.vn. Prices and coach layouts differ by train and by season, so check current fares on the official site. Compare the class names on the official site with what a booking agent offers, and confirm both before you pay.

Can I sit up all night instead of taking a berth?

You can, but it is a poor trade on a long leg. Seats cost less, yet you arrive tired and the next day is partly lost. On a short leave, a berth protects your first morning. Seats suit only short daytime runs.
