Overnight to Sapa

Hanoi to Sapa: Sleeper Train or Sleeper Bus

You want to wake up in the mountains without losing a hotel night or a day of leave.

Take the sleeper train if you want a flatter, steadier night and have motion sickness to manage. Take the sleeper bus if you want a shorter, simpler transfer that ends closer to Sapa. Either way you arrive in the early morning, so ask your hotel about early check-in.

Which suits which traveller?

  • Light sleepers and toddlers: the train, for the flat bed and the toilet on board.
  • Motion sickness: the train, then a short, careful climb to Sapa.
  • Budget couples: compare both fares, then pick the one you can book without stress.
  • Short leave: the bus, if you want to reach Sapa without a second change.
  • Seniors: the train, with a lower berth if possible.

The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km1. Sapa itself is approximately 300 km northwest of Hanoi2, so treat this as a full overnight, not a quick hop.

What is the arrival really like?

You arrive early, before most hotels are ready. Ask whether your hotel offers early check-in, or at least a place to leave bags and freshen up.

Sapa is cool. Its annual mean temperature is 15.3 C and January averages 8.7 C3. Pack a layer to wear off the train or bus, because the morning feels cold if you are used to Malaysia.

What should you check before you book?

  • Whether your hotel allows early check-in or a bag store.
  • Whether the berth is lower or upper, and whether a child can sleep beside you.
  • Whether you get motion sickness on mountain roads.
  • Whether you prefer one change or two.

What if you want more comfort?

Older travellers should read overnight trains and buses for seniors. A private train carriage adds comfort, though not for every budget. See Hanoi to Sapa private train carriages.

Common questions

Which is more comfortable, the sleeper train or the sleeper bus?

The train gives you a flat bed in a shared cabin, with space to stretch out and a toilet on board. The bus berth is narrower and more reclined, but it carries you almost to Sapa. For most light sleepers, the train is easier. For a shorter, simpler transfer, the bus wins.

Which one is better if I get motion sickness?

The train, because the ride along the rails is flatter and steadier. The road to Sapa climbs in bends, and a bus berth magnifies the sway. If you or a child get carsick, take the train to Lao Cai, then take medicine and a seat at the front for the final climb.

Does the train take me all the way to Sapa?

No. The railway ends at Lao Cai, a separate town from Sapa. From there you still take a road transfer up to Sapa town. The bus runs closer to Sapa, so it can save you that second change.

When do I arrive, and can I check in early?

Both options arrive in the early morning, before normal hotel check-in. Ask your hotel in advance about early check-in, a luggage store or a rest room. Without that, plan a slow breakfast and a gentle first morning.

Is it suitable for children or grandparents?

The train is the gentler choice, because a lower berth and a toilet on board suit toddlers and elders. The bus berths are tighter and the shoe rule and the toilet stops are harder with small children. Older travellers should read our seniors guide first.

Should I book ahead?

Yes, especially in busy months. Train tickets can be bought on the official booking site or through an agent you trust. For buses, choose an operator whose safety signals you can check.
