Sleeper buses

How Sleeper Buses in Vietnam Work

You have never ridden a bus with beds, and want to know what the night is like.

A sleeper bus is an overnight coach with reclined, bed-like berths. You lie back, sleep and wake up in the next city. It suits budget couples and friends who sleep anywhere, but it asks a little more of children, seniors and tall travellers.

What is a berth like?

A berth is a reclined seat that stretches into a bed, set on two levels. It is narrower than a hotel bed, and the length is fixed. A blanket and a small pillow come with the berth.

Lower berths are easier to get in and out of. Upper berths take a small climb, which is harder for elders and small children. Ask for a lower berth when you book.

What is the shoe-bag rule?

You take your shoes off at the door and carry them on board in a plastic bag. This keeps the berths clean. Wear socks, pick slip-on shoes and keep the bag at your feet.

How do toilet stops work?

Some buses have a toilet on board and some do not. If yours has none, the bus stops at roadside rest points a few times in the night. The stops are short, so be ready when the driver announces them.

Limit drinks late in the evening, and keep tissues and hand sanitiser in your small bag. If you travel with a toddler, plan an extra stop and read overnight trains and buses with young children.

What should Muslim travellers plan for?

Rest stops run to the driver’s schedule, not to prayer times. Pray before you board where you can, and be ready to use a quiet corner at a stop. Our guide to prayer and halal meal stops on long journeys explains how to check the meal side.

Where do the bags go?

Large bags go into a hold under the bus. Small bags come into your berth. Keep your passport, phone and cash on you, not in the hold. Label your bag and take a photo of it before you hand it over.

Common questions

What is a sleeper bus?

It is a long-distance coach with reclined bed-like berths instead of ordinary seats, set on two levels. You lie back, cover yourself with a blanket and sleep as the bus travels overnight. It is a common way to cover long distances without paying for a hotel night.

Do I have to take my shoes off?

Yes. Sleeper buses ask you to remove your shoes at the door and carry them on board in a plastic bag. Wear socks that you are happy to show, and slip-on shoes make boarding easier. The rule keeps the berths clean.

Is there a toilet on board?

Some buses have one and some do not. Ask before you buy. Where there is no toilet, the bus stops at roadside rest points a few times in the night. Limit drinks in the evening, and keep tissues and hand sanitiser with you.

Can tall travellers sleep comfortably?

The berth is a fixed length and narrower than a bed. Tall travellers may find their feet reach the end. Ask the seller about berth length, and try a lower berth near the front, which gives you a little more room.

Where do bags go?

Large bags are loaded into a hold under the bus, and small bags come into the berth with you. Keep your passport, phone and money on you at all times. Label your bag and take a photo of it before you hand it over.
