Overnight Trains and Buses with Young Children

A night journey with a toddler can work, if you choose an option where they can lie down.

For young children, a night train in a closed compartment is the safer bet than a sleeper bus. The child can lie flat, an adult can walk them to the toilet and the ride is smoother. Skip the winding mountain night buses until the children are older.

Which overnight options suit children?

Pick by what a small child needs, not by speed.

  • Night train, soft sleeper, family booked together: the best fit. Read our train cabin classes guide first.
  • Private train carriage on the Sapa line: works for a larger group that wants its own space. See Hanoi to Sapa private train carriages.
  • Sleeper bus on a main highway: possible with older children. Understand the berths in how a sleeper bus works.
  • Mountain sleeper bus: skip it. The Hanoi to Ha Giang bus is a road for adults.

Which night legs would we skip?

Anything that ends in a long, winding road at dawn. A child who is sick in a bus is a long morning for everyone.

The Hanoi to Lao Cai railway is 296 km of single track1, and Sapa sits high above it, so the day after is a mountain road. If you want Sapa with a toddler, give it extra time and rest before you go up.

Consider a daytime leg and an extra hotel night when the child sleeps badly. Our guide on whether overnight travel really saves a hotel night tests that choice honestly.

What should the child carry?

Keep it to a short kit, kept in one bag at arm’s reach.

  • A light blanket or sarong and the sleeping toy.
  • Wet wipes, tissues and a change of clothes.
  • Snacks and water, without messy spills.
  • A pill pack for motion sickness, if your doctor has advised it.
  • A small torch for the toilet trip.

The full list for adults is in what to pack for an overnight journey.

What should you check before you book?

  • Book the whole compartment, or at least lower berths together, on the official site, dsvn.vn2.
  • Confirm toilet location and whether the train has cleaning stops.
  • Choose an operator with a safe record. See how to choose a sleeper bus operator.
  • Arrange the hotel’s early check-in or luggage hold.

Common questions

Is a night train better than a sleeper bus for toddlers?

For most young families, yes. A train compartment is closed, flat and you can stand up and walk to the toilet. A sleeper bus berth is narrow and the road can be bendy, which unsettles small children. If the bus is the only option, choose a lower berth and sit the child on the inside.

What age is too young for an overnight journey?

There is no fixed age, because it depends on your child and your doctor's advice. A baby who feeds frequently, or a child who gets motion-sick easily, may do better with a daytime leg and an extra hotel night. Ask your paediatrician if you are unsure.

Where should the children sleep on a train?

Put children on the lower berths, with an adult on a berth above or opposite. Lower berths avoid falls and let you reach them in the dark. Book as a family so you fill the compartment together rather than sharing with strangers.

How do I avoid a tired child on arrival day?

Plan an easy first morning. Arrive, drop bags, eat, and let the child nap before any sightseeing. Do not schedule a big attraction on the day you arrive. Ask the hotel if the room can be ready early, or at least hold luggage.
