An Bang or Cua Dai: Which Hoi An Beach to Stay

Two beaches, one old town: choose by sand, quiet and how you get home at night.

For a slow beach stay near Hoi An, An Bang is the more relaxed choice, with cafes on the sand and a quieter evening. Cua Dai has larger resorts and a shorter ride to the old town, but erosion means you should check each property’s beach before you book. Either way, plan on a ride home from the old town at night.

Which beach suits which traveller?

  • Slow couples, cafes and quiet: An Bang.
  • Larger resort, pool, shorter ride to town: Cua Dai.
  • Families with young children: the property with the safest swimming and a pool, wherever it is.
  • Every evening in the old town: stay closer in, or accept a daily ride.

Why do people choose An Bang?

It has a laid-back feel, with small cafes along the sand and a calmer evening. It suits couples who want to read, swim and eat without hurry. Check what the beach is like in your month, because the sea changes with the season.

What should you know about Cua Dai?

Cua Dai has the larger resorts and a shorter run to the old town. The shoreline has lost sand to erosion in past years, so a hotel that once sat on a wide beach may now have much less. Ask three questions: how wide is the beach now, is there a sea wall, and can I swim in my month?

How far is the old town at night?

Hoi An Ancient Town was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 19991. Both beaches are a short ride from it, and you will want to go in the evening, when the lantern lights are on. Plan the ride back by Grab, taxi or hotel shuttle, and ask the hotel when the shuttle stops. Hoi An lies some 28 km south of Da Nang2, which matters if you also want a Da Nang base.

When is the sea good for swimming?

On the central coast, the rainy season starts August to September and peaks October to November3. Da Nang lists its wet and typhoon season as September to December and its dry season as January to August4. Hoi An is close enough that the pattern is similar. Swim in the dry months, and read the flags in the wet ones.

What should you check before booking?

  • Beach width today, from recent photos.
  • Whether the sea is safe for swimming in your month.
  • Shuttle hours to the old town.
  • A pool for rough-sea days.

Read the Hoi An guide for the town itself, compare resort formats in beach resort or city hotel in Da Nang, and use the family resort checklist with children. For a day on the water, see the Cham Islands. More advice is in Hotels and places to stay.

Common questions

Is An Bang better than Cua Dai?

An Bang suits slow stays because of its relaxed beach feel and cafes along the sand. Cua Dai offers larger resorts and a shorter ride to the old town. The right one depends on your hotel and how much beach it still has, so check recent photos and ask the property directly.

What is the erosion at Cua Dai?

Parts of the Cua Dai shoreline have lost sand in past years, so some resorts have a narrower beach than older photos show. Ask the property how wide its beach is now, whether it has a sea wall or sandbags, and whether swimming is possible in the month you travel.

How far is each beach from Hoi An old town at night?

Both are a short ride from the old town, not a comfortable walk after dark. Plan to return by Grab, taxi or the hotel's shuttle, and ask the hotel about shuttle hours. If you plan several evenings in town, a stay closer to the old town may be easier.

Can we swim all year at Hoi An beaches?

No. The central coast has a rainy season from August or September that peaks in October and November. In those months the sea can be rough and flags may close the beach. The drier months are the safer window for swimming, so check your month before booking.
