Short leave

How Flight Times Shape a Short Vietnam Trip

Four days of leave rarely means four days in Vietnam: see what your flight times really leave you.

On a four-day leave, the best flight pattern is a morning flight out and a late flight home. That gives you close to three useful days. A late arrival and a morning departure can shrink the same leave to two. The flight time shapes the trip more than the destination does.

How do the three patterns compare?

The same four days look different under three flight patterns.

PatternDay 1Day 4Usable days
Morning out, late backMost of the afternoon and eveningMost of the dayClose to three
Midday out, midday backA short eveningHalf a dayClose to two and a half
Night out, morning backAlmost nothingAlmost nothingTwo or fewer

These are planning shapes, not promises. Real times depend on the airline and the date.

What does each pattern feel like?

Morning out, late back. You land in time for a late lunch, a walk and an early dinner. Day four is a real day, with bags stored after checkout. It suits families and anyone who tires easily.

Midday out, midday back. Day one is mostly transit, and day four is a breakfast and a transfer. It is workable if you keep the plan small, with one base and no day trips.

Night out, morning back. You arrive after dark and leave at dawn, so the hotel mostly gets used for sleep. This pattern costs the most leave for the least trip.

Which airlines and cities does this involve?

From Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi is listed with AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air1. Da Nang has the same four2. Compare their schedules on the airline sites, because flight patterns shift by season.

For Hanoi, Noi Bai is about 35 km from downtown4, so add the ride to the shape of day one and day four. Our KL arrival guide compares the gateways.

How should you plan around your pattern?

  • Fix your base first, then fit one or two outings around the flights.
  • On a late-arrival day, plan only a meal and sleep.
  • On a morning-departure day, plan nothing, and sort the bags the night before. See our guide to the last night before your flight home.
  • Read the local times on your ticket, because Vietnam uses UTC+7 all year3.
  • Keep one extra buffer day if your leave allows it.

Lay your times into the travel-day checker and then use the route chooser to pick a region that fits what remains. If you are considering different arrival and departure cities, see choosing arrival and departure cities. The Flying from Malaysia hub covers more.

Common questions

How many usable days does a four-day leave give me?

It depends on your flight times. With a morning arrival and a late departure you can keep close to three useful days. With a late arrival and a morning departure you may keep only two. Check the actual times before you choose a destination.

Which flight times should I ask for?

Ask for a morning flight out and a late flight home. That pattern gives you a full afternoon on the first day and a full last day. If the fare for that pattern is higher, compare it with the value of a day of leave.

Is it worth paying more for better flight times?

A small difference in fare buys back most of a day, which is cheap compared with a day of leave and a night of hotel you barely use. Work out your total and decide from that, not from the fare alone.

Does the time zone change my day?

Check the local time printed on your ticket and plan from that. Sleep is the bigger effect: an early start after a late arrival is tiring, particularly for children and older relatives.

Which destination suits a four-day trip?

Pick one base. Central Vietnam with Da Nang, or a Hanoi city stay, both fit well. Moving between regions on a short trip uses a day in transit, so it works against you.
