Planning Your Last Night in Vietnam
An early flight home should not cut your last day short: plan the night, checkout and transfer together.
For an early flight home, sleep close to the airport and keep the last evening simple. For a later flight, stay in the city and enjoy the last day, but book the transfer in advance. Either way, work backwards from the flight time so nothing is squeezed at the end.
How do you work backwards from the flight?
Start with the departure time and count back in four steps.
- Airport check-in: use the time your airline recommends.
- The ride: add a cushion for traffic.
- Hotel checkout: ask what time rooms must be vacated.
- The last meal: set it where it does not rush the rest.
For Hanoi, Noi Bai is about 35 km from downtown1. That is a proper ride, not a quick hop, so give it room. Our airport versus city stay guide covers the trade-offs.
Which flight times call for an airport night?
| Departure | Best last night | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Very early morning | Near the airport | A short ride, a calmer wake-up |
| Late morning | City, early to bed | Time for breakfast, packing and a relaxed ride |
| Afternoon or evening | City, enjoy the day | Bags stored after checkout, a rest before the ride |
How can parents and grandparents enjoy the last day?
Choose one easy outing near the hotel, such as a slow walk or a café. Sort the bags the night before, keep passports and chargers in one hand-luggage pocket and leave dinner unhurried.
If your flight is early, treat the last evening as a rest, not another sightseeing slot. Our first night guide helps with the same decision on arrival, and the same logic applies on departure.
What small jobs make departure easier?
- Book the airport transfer a day ahead, and save the driver’s number.
- Check in online if your airline allows it.
- Spend or exchange your leftover dong3 before you reach the gate. Vietnam Airlines advises exchanging money at the airport, local banks or authorised counters2.
- Keep souvenirs that might be liquids or food in your checked bag.
- Confirm your bag allowance, because shopping adds weight.

Common questions
Should we stay near the airport on the last night?
For a very early flight, yes. Sleeping close to the airport means a short ride and a calmer morning. For a midday or evening flight, stay in the city and enjoy the last day, then leave with a comfortable margin.
How early should we leave for the airport?
Work backwards from the check-in time your airline gives for your flight. Add the ride, plus a cushion for traffic. For older relatives or children, extend that cushion rather than trimming it, because rushing at the end spoils a good trip.
What should we do with leftover dong?
Spend it on your last meal or snacks, or exchange it back at the airport or an authorised counter. Use an authorised counter only. Keep any small notes for tips and drinks.
Can we use the last day if checkout is early?
Yes. Ask the hotel to store your bags after checkout and choose one easy outing near the hotel. A long walk, a slow lunch and a rest before the transfer usually beat a packed itinerary.
