Island Beach or City Beach in Vietnam

A quiet island resort or a city beach with dinner outside your door: pick for your group.

Choose a city beach if you value convenience, easy meals and a rainy-day backup. Choose an island resort if you want calm, space and a pool day with little to organise. Think about your worst day, not your best one, because that is the day your base has to carry.

What does each style give you?

An island resort gives you quiet. A city beach gives you choice.

  • Island resort (Phu Quoc): a self-contained stay, quiet evenings, transfers by taxi or hotel shuttle.
  • City beach (Da Nang, Nha Trang): cafes, shops and sights close by, and easy fixes if plans change.

How big is the island, really?

Phu Quoc covers 575 km21. That is large enough that your resort location decides how much you can walk, so ask where the nearest restaurants and the beach are before you book.

The island’s international airport was put into operation on 2 December 20122. It lists AirAsia and Sun PhuQuoc Airways flying to Kuala Lumpur International3, so you can reach it without a domestic connection.

What do city beaches add?

Da Nang sits about 28 km from Hoi An4, which makes a cultural day trip easy. Nha Trang is 30 km from its airport5, so plan an arrival drive. Our Da Nang city guide and Nha Trang stay areas show where to base yourself.

When is the island at its best?

Phu Quoc has a rainy season roughly April to November and a dry season roughly December to March6. A year-end holiday suits the island, and a mid-year holiday usually suits a central city beach better. Our weather by month guide shows each month.

What should you check before choosing?

  • How you spend a normal holiday afternoon: pool, walking or sightseeing.
  • The ages and mobility of everyone in the group.
  • Whether your dates are in a wet window.
  • How far the resort sits from restaurants and the beach.

For a three-way comparison, read Phu Quoc, Nha Trang or Da Nang. Our Phu Quoc profile covers the island in more detail. More advice lives in Regions and where to go.

Common questions

What is the main difference between an island and a city beach?

On an island resort you spend most of the day inside one property and travel by taxi or hotel shuttle for anything else. On a city beach, shops, clinics, cafes and sights are a short walk or ride away. The island gives calm and space, and the city gives choice and easy fixes when plans change.

Which is easier with a toddler?

A city beach is easier when you want quick access to pharmacies, restaurants and a bed to rest in during a tantrum. An island resort is easier when your toddler loves a pool and you want a car-free, enclosed space. Ask yourself whether you want convenience on the worst day or calm on the best day.

Which suits grandparents better?

A city beach usually suits them better, because short walks, level pavements and nearby food mean less planning. A resort island can still work if the resort is flat, has a lift or ground-floor rooms and a nearby dining room. Ask the resort about stairs, shuttle access and distance to the beach before booking.

Is the island harder in the rain?

Yes, because there is less to do when the weather turns. A city beach gives you cafes, malls and museums as backup. On an island you rely on the resort's indoor options. Phu Quoc is rainy roughly April to November, so pack a rainy-day plan if you travel in those months.
