Johor Bahru or Changi: Where to Fly From
A cheaper fare means little until you add the Causeway, the transfer and the early start.
Compare Senai and Changi on one worksheet, with the same lines for both. The fare is only one line. The border crossing, the transfer and the early start can decide which is cheaper in practice.
What is the six-line method?
Make two columns, one for Senai and one for Changi. Fill in live quotes for each line.
- Fare, including bags and seat choice.
- Ground transport to the airport, from your door.
- Border cost, such as tolls, a bus or a shared ride, and parking or drop-off.
- Meals and small extras on the longer airport morning.
- Time, in hours, from your door to the gate.
- The return, including a late-night ride home.
Add the money lines. Then look at the time line and ask whether the saving is worth it. Our Vietnam cost worksheet in ringgit has the layout ready.
What does Senai give you?
Senai lists Ho Chi Minh City as its only Vietnam destination, served by AirAsia1. Ho Chi Minh City also lists AirAsia flying to Johor Bahru2.
That is a simple, direct start for a southern trip. For the north or centre you would connect.
When does Changi come out ahead?
Changi can win when its fare is low enough to cover the crossing and the transfer, and when you are happy to start early. Check the full sum, not the headline fare.
Be honest about the day. An early start, a border queue and a long airport morning tire you before the holiday begins. If the saving is small, the easier day is worth more.
How does a group change the maths?
The fixed cost of crossing, such as a car or a ride, is shared among more people in a group. That can make Changi cheaper per head for four friends than for a couple. Run the numbers for your actual group size.
Friends also need to agree on who carries the early start. Decide before you book.
What should you check before you commit?
- Passports and Singapore’s current entry rules, on official sources.
- How you will cross, and what time the crossing is quietest for your travel day.
- Whether your flight time allows an unhurried crossing.
- The return leg after a late arrival.

Common questions
How do I compare Senai and Changi fairly?
Use one worksheet with the same lines for each: fare, bags, ground transport to the airport, border costs, meals, and the value of the time. Fill in live quotes for both. Whichever total is lower, and still leaves you rested, is your answer for that date.
Does a group of friends change the answer?
Yes. A shared car or ride across the Causeway splits the fixed cost across more people, which can make Changi cheaper per person. A couple pays the same fixed cost between two. Run the sums for your exact group size.
What costs do people forget?
Parking or a drop-off for the car, ground transport on the Singapore side, a meal during the longer airport morning, and the return ride home late at night. These can erase a fare saving. List them before you decide.
Is flying from Senai too limited?
Senai lists Ho Chi Minh City as its only Vietnam destination, so it suits a southern start. If you want Hanoi or Da Nang, you connect. For some trips that is fine, for others the extra leg tips the balance back to Kuala Lumpur or Changi.
