Flying From KL to Vietnam: What to Compare
Short leave means the flight you pick shapes the whole trip, so compare the right things.
From Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) you have more choice than from any other Malaysian airport. Compare four things: the terminal, the type of airline, the arrival city and the baggage rules. Fares go stale in a day, but these four decide how much of your short leave you actually keep.
Which Vietnamese cities can you reach from KLIA?
KLIA’s Vietnam destinations include Da Lat, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc, although the list we checked may be incomplete1. Each city suits a different trip, so match the arrival city to where your itinerary starts.
For the big three, the airline lists we found are:
- Hanoi: AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and VietJet Air2.
- Da Nang: the same four3.
- Ho Chi Minh City: Malaysia Airlines, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia4.
Batik Air Malaysia is listed on both the Hanoi and Da Nang routes5. Schedules shift by season, so confirm on the airline’s own site.
What should you compare, and why?
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal | A wrong terminal can cost your first morning | Read the terminal on your e-ticket |
| Airline type | Bags, seats and meals may or may not be included | Price the whole trip, not the seat |
| Arrival city | It sets your first night and your transfer | Land near where the route starts |
| Baggage rules | Weight and cabin limits differ | Check before you pack |
Treat any “from” fare as a starting point. Add bags, seats, meals and the transfer from the airport before you compare. Our trip budget builder lets you plug in today’s quotes.
Which terminal will you use?
Your e-ticket tells you. Do not guess from the airline’s name or from what a friend did last year, because airlines change terminals. Check again two days before you fly.
The two terminals are separate buildings, and the move between them is not a casual walk. Seniors and families with toddlers should read KLIA versus klia2 for Vietnam flights before the trip.
Is a direct flight always better?
For short leave, yes in most cases, but not always. A direct flight saves a connection and a lot of risk.
A connecting itinerary can still make sense if it is a single ticket with bags checked through. The trade-offs are laid out in direct or connecting flights to Vietnam.
How do you choose the arrival city?
Start from where your route begins, not from the seat that looks like a bargain. A first-timer going to Ha Long Bay should look at Hanoi.
A beach-first trip may start in Da Nang. A food-and-city trip may start in Ho Chi Minh City. Our KL to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang guide walks through each.
What is the next step?
Fix your leave days and your region, then check the Malaysia to Vietnam flight routes for the airlines listed. Use the route chooser if you are still deciding the region. More planning pages sit in flying from Malaysia.
If you give us your leave dates, your home airport and who is travelling, we can narrow down which arrival city and which kind of flight protect the most holiday time.
Common questions
Which Vietnamese cities can I fly to from KLIA?
A list of KLIA destinations in Vietnam includes Da Lat, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc, though the source notes the list may be incomplete. Routes change by season, so check the airline sites for your dates before you plan around any one city.
Do I fly from KLIA or klia2?
It depends on the airline you book. Your booking confirmation or e-ticket names the terminal, so read it rather than assuming. The two terminals are separate buildings, and going to the wrong one costs time. Our KLIA versus klia2 guide shows how to check and how much buffer to leave.
Is a full-service or a low-cost airline better for Vietnam?
Neither wins every time. Full-service tickets bundle bags and meals, while low-cost fares add them one by one. Price the whole trip with bags, seats and food included, then compare. A low fare that adds a connection can cost more than a direct one.
How early should I book my flight to Vietnam?
Fix your leave dates and region first, then book once you are sure, since changes can be costly. Fares move by season and school holiday, so no single booking window is safe. Watch the fare for your dates for a few days and book when it suits your budget.
Should I book flights before hotels and a package?
Decide the region and arrival city first, then flights, then stays. If you plan to use a package, ask whether flights are included, since that changes what you compare. The package inclusion comparator lists what to check so nothing is double-booked.
