Delta night

Mekong Overnight: Boat Stay or Homestay

A floating cabin and a village room give you two very different Mekong evenings.

Choose a boat stay if you want the river itself to be the experience, with sunset and sunrise on the water. Choose a homestay if you want to meet a family, eat home-cooked food and walk through a village. For a first Mekong night, either works, but they feel very different.

Which suits which traveller?

Decide by what you want the evening to feel like.

  • Couples who want the river: a floating cabin.
  • First-timers who want a village glimpse: a homestay.
  • Travellers who dislike shared bathrooms: check the boat cabin, or a private-bath homestay.
  • Families with toddlers: a homestay on land is often easier to manage.

How does the season change the choice?

Ho Chi Minh City has a rainy season roughly from May to November and a dry season from December to April1. The delta follows a similar pattern.

In the rainy months, a covered deck on a boat keeps the evening comfortable. A homestay has a roof and rooms, but paths can be muddy. In the dry months, both are easy to enjoy, so pick by mood.

What should you ask about a boat stay?

  • Is the cabin private, with its own bathroom?
  • Does the boat sleep on the water or moor at a pier?
  • What happens in bad weather or low water?
  • Are halal or no-pork meals possible, and how is the kitchen handled?

What should you ask about a homestay?

  • Is the bathroom private, and is there hot water?
  • Is there a net, a fan or air-conditioning?
  • Can the host speak enough English or Malay, or use a translation app?
  • What do dinner and breakfast include?

For a detailed look at a homestay, read Mekong homestay in Ben Tre. For a base in a bigger town, see the Can Tho page, and for the wider choice between a day and a night, see Mekong Delta day trip or overnight. Our Mekong Delta page and Hotels and places to stay cover the rest.

Common questions

Is a Mekong boat stay more comfortable than a homestay?

A boat cabin usually has a private room and bathroom in a compact form, while a homestay may share facilities but gives you land and a family evening. Comfort depends on the specific boat or house. Ask for photos and details of the bathroom and cooling, and compare both on the same list.

Which is quieter at night?

Both have river sounds, but they differ. On a boat you hear engines, water and neighbouring boats. In a village you may hear roosters, dogs and early morning activity. If you are a light sleeper, pack earplugs and ask for a room away from the road or the engine.

Which suits a couple on a slow trip?

A floating cabin suits couples who want the river itself as the main experience, with sunset on the water. A homestay suits couples who prefer to meet a family and eat home-cooked food. Choose by whether you want the river or the village.

Does the season change the choice?

Yes. The delta's rainy season runs roughly May to November, so wet evenings are likelier then. A covered boat deck helps in rain, while a homestay offers rooms and a roof but muddier paths. In the dry months either option is easier to enjoy.
