School Breaks and Vietnam Weather
Fixed to the June or December school break, and wondering which regions line up with it.
Match the break to the region, not the other way round. The mid-year break points to the central coast. The year-end break points to Phu Quoc and the south. No month promises dry days, so keep a rain plan either way.
How does each school break line up?
Treat the table as a starting point for your family’s choice, not a forecast.
| School break | Regions that fit better | Regions to plan more carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-year (around June) | Da Nang and the central coast | Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City, the northern mountains |
| Year-end (November to January) | Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi for cool air | Da Nang and Hue, early in the break |
| Short term breaks | One base with few transfers | Long multi-city routes |
What does the mid-year break mean for weather?
Da Nang lists its dry season as January to August1, so a June break fits the central coast. That makes Da Nang, Hoi An and the beach a natural match for families.
Other regions are wetter. Phu Quoc lists its rainy season as roughly April to November2, and Ho Chi Minh City’s rainy season runs roughly May to November3. Sa Pa gets 2,000 to 2,500 mm of rain a year, mostly April to September6. In the north, the rainy season in the delta starts April to May and ends October to November4.
What does the year-end break mean for weather?
Phu Quoc’s dry season starts around December, and Ho Chi Minh City’s dry season runs December to April, so the south and the island are a natural pair. For families, that means pool days and calm sightseeing.
Hanoi turns cool: January is its coolest month, at a mean of 16.4 C5. That surprises families from Malaysia, so pack layers. Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season continues until December, so keep a backup if you head central.
What about the shorter breaks?
Short breaks need one base. Pick the city whose weather window fits and stay put. A second city adds a transfer day you do not have.
How do you turn the match into a plan?
- Pick your school break.
- Choose the region from the table.
- Read the month-by-month guide for that region.
- Add a rain plan for each day.

Common questions
Which region works for the mid-year school break?
Da Nang and the central coast sit in their dry season from January to August, so they are a strong match for June. Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City are in their rainy season then. Hanoi is hot and in rain, so keep indoor options ready.
Which region works for the year-end break?
Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City are in their dry season from around December. Hanoi turns cool, which some families enjoy. Da Nang is still in its wet and typhoon window until December, so a central plan needs a rain backup.
Do the shorter term breaks matter?
Yes, but they are too short to move far. A short break suits one base, such as Hanoi or Da Nang, with few transfers. Check the weather for that month before choosing, and keep the plan flexible for a day of rain.
Is any season certain to be dry?
No. A dry season only means less rain overall. Storms and showers can still arrive. Use the season to choose a region that is more likely to suit you, and build a rain plan into every day.
