Plan Baggage Space for Shopping in Vietnam
Decide your bag weight before the first market stop, so shopping never becomes an airport bill.
Decide your bag weight before you shop, not at the check-in counter. Work out what every flight on your trip allows, buy any extra weight online first and keep fragile or liquid items in the bag you control. Then a morning in the market stays a good morning.
Which flight sets your real limit?
The tightest flight sets your limit, not the biggest one. A low-cost fare from Kuala Lumpur may carry a cabin bag only unless you added a checked bag. A short domestic hop inside Vietnam can have a smaller allowance again.
Open each booking and write down three things for every leg: checked weight, cabin weight and bag size limits. If you travel on a package, ask the agency to put the allowance for each flight in writing. Our package enquiry checklist shows where to ask.
When should you buy extra weight?
Buy it before you fly if you already know you will shop. Compare the online add-on price with the airport counter for your airline and route, because fees differ and we cannot quote a figure. Our guide to low-cost airline add-ons in Vietnam explains bags, seats and meals.
Add the extra weight as its own line in the trip budget builder, so it does not surprise you later.
What goes in the hold and what stays with you?
Sort your purchases by how they travel.
- Cabin bag: camera, medicine, passport, small fragile gifts wrapped in clothes.
- Hold bag: lacquerware, ceramics wrapped in soft clothing, coffee, tea and dried fruit.
- Liquids: fish sauce, chilli sauce and balms need sealed, double-bagged containers in the hold, because cabin rules limit container size.
- Food and plants: check the official Malaysian Customs guidance for what you may bring home.
How do you leave room on the way out?
Pack light on the way in. A folding bag costs little and gives you a second piece for the return.
Leave worn clothes behind if you have bought new ones. Weigh your bags the evening before departure with a small luggage scale, then move items between bags until the heavy one fits. If a purchase is too heavy, ask your hotel about posting it home.
Trains, buses and cruises have their own rules too. See luggage limits on Vietnam trains, buses and cruises before you pack for those legs.
Where should you shop with this plan?
Shop for heavy items last, in the final city before you fly home. That keeps them out of every internal transfer. Browse first, then buy: our guides to the Dong Xuan and Ben Thanh markets show what to buy and what to skip.

Common questions
Is the baggage allowance the same on every flight in Vietnam?
No. A fare from Kuala Lumpur, a low-cost fare and a domestic hop can each carry a different checked and cabin allowance. Your real limit is the tightest flight on the trip. Open every booking, note the checked weight, cabin weight and size limits for each leg, and plan around the smallest one.
Is it cheaper to add bag weight online or at the airport?
Compare both for your airline and route before you travel. We cannot quote a figure because add-on fees differ by airline, route and date. If you already know you will shop, buying the extra weight online ahead of time removes a guess at the counter and lets you budget it.
Can I carry fish sauce, coffee or sweets home in my cabin bag?
Dry items such as coffee beans, tea and dried fruit are easy to carry. Liquids and sauces face container limits in the cabin, so seal them in a double bag and put them in the hold. For food rules on arrival in Malaysia, read the official Customs guidance before you pack.
What if I still run out of space on the last day?
Leave older clothes behind, move heavy items into one checked bag and ask your hotel about posting a parcel home. Do the weighing the evening before, with a luggage scale, so the last morning stays calm. Keep fragile gifts in your cabin bag wrapped in clothing.
