Luggage Limits on Vietnam Trains, Buses and Cruises
Heavy bags are easy on a flight and harder on a train, coach or small boat.
Rail, coach and small boats each set their own luggage rules, so ask the operator for your leg. Send the question in writing and keep the reply. Then pack one light bag for the journey and let the big case travel in the hold.
Who sets the rules for each type of transport?
Each operator does. That is why a rule you read about one coach may not apply to the next. Ask the one you are booking.
- Train: Vietnam Railways, through its official booking site, dsvn.vn1.
- Coach or sleeper bus: the bus company named on your ticket.
- Cruise or small boat: the cruise company or the boat owner.
- Airline leg: the airline, for checked and cabin bags.
What should you ask about rail?
Vietnam Railways runs a main North-South line of about 1,727 km on a single track, and total track is 3,160 km, mostly metre gauge2. Carriages are narrow, and storage is shared with other passengers.
Ask these questions for your class.
- How many bags can each passenger bring?
- Is there a size limit, and where do large cases go?
- Can an elder get help at the station with steps?
What about coaches and sleeper buses?
Space is limited, and loading is by the crew. Ask whether big cases go in the hold, whether there is a fee for extras and who is responsible if something is damaged. Pack valuables and medicines in a small bag you keep beside you.
For the cost side of choosing one, read Sleeper Bus, Train or Flight.
How do small boats and cruises handle bags?
Cabins are compact. Ha Long Bay was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 19943, and cruises there are popular. Ask the cruise company whether you can leave a large case at the pier or at your hotel.
Keep only what you need for the night in a soft, small bag. Ask about steps onto the boat if your group includes seniors.
How do you pack when you plan to shop?
Leave space in your bag at the start, rather than buying a new case later. The baggage planning guide for shopping shows how. Check airline fees too, as in Low-Cost Airline Add-Ons.
Try your day in the travel-day checker. If your group includes elders, see Central Vietnam for Seniors. More help sits in Costs and package value.
Tell us your route, the number of bags and who will be carrying them, and we can suggest what to ask each operator before you buy tickets.
Common questions
Where do I find the luggage rules for Vietnam trains?
Vietnam Railways lists dsvn.vn as its official booking website. Start there and ask the operator directly if the rule for your class is unclear. Do not rely on a forum post, since rules can change. Keep any written answer with your booking confirmation.
Are coach luggage rules the same everywhere?
No. Each coach operator sets its own rules for bag size, number of bags and handling. A sleeper bus has limited storage, and larger cases may need to go under the vehicle. Ask the operator before you buy, and ask what happens with extra bags.
What about small boats and cruises?
Boats have less space than hotels or planes. On Ha Long Bay, overnight cruises may ask you to pack a small bag for the cabin, and the operator may store the large case. Ask the cruise company what is allowed and where the case stays.
How should seniors pack for a night leg?
Pack a light overnight bag with medicines, a change of clothes, a charger and a light layer. Keep the big case with the driver or the operator's hold. Choose bags with wheels that roll easily, and ask a family member to carry anything heavy up steps.
