The lowest-priced ticket can cost you a day, so count time and luggage too.
The lowest ticket price is not always the lowest-cost leg. Count the ticket, the hours, the luggage and the day the journey takes from your holiday. A flight can be better value if it saves a day of leave, and a train can be better if you value the ride itself.

What does the train really involve?
Vietnam’s North-South railway is 1,726 km long1. End-to-end journeys last about 30 hours, with express timetables about 33 to 34 hours2. You are unlikely to ride all of it, but it shows how big the country is.
Official bookings go through Vietnam Railways’ website, dsvn.vn3. The Hanoi to Lao Cai line is 296 km4, which is the usual rail route to the Sa Pa area. Check class and berth options before you pay.
How do you count a lost day?
Add up the hours from your hotel door to the next hotel door. Include waiting, transfers and the recovery morning after a night on board. Then ask what you would do with that time if you flew.
If the answer is “a full beach day”, the flight may pay for itself. If the answer is “sleep late”, the cheaper option may be fine. Test your plan in the travel-day checker.
What about luggage and mixed groups?

Which costs least, bus, train or flight?
The ticket is usually lowest on a bus or train, but it is not the whole price. Add the night you spend travelling, the time at stations, the transfer to the station and any bag fee. A flight can be the better value when it saves a day of leave. Compare totals, not tickets.
Does a sleeper bus or train save a hotel night?
It can, since you sleep while you travel. But a poor night's sleep can cost you the next morning. If you arrive tired, you may need an early hotel check-in or a rest day. Count that before you decide the overnight option is free.
How do I book a train in Vietnam?
Vietnam Railways lists dsvn.vn as its official booking website. Check timetables and seat classes there, and keep your confirmation. Book earlier in busy periods. Ask about luggage rules for your class before you travel, since space on board is limited.
What should I think about with luggage?
Flights may charge for checked bags, while trains and coaches have space limits and handling differences. Heavy cases are hard to carry in a sleeper compartment. Pack a small overnight bag for the night and check the operator's rule for large cases.
