When Vietnam Prices Jump and How to Test Your Dates
Short leave means fixed dates, so find out early whether your week is a peak week.
Three kinds of dates move Vietnam prices: Tet, school and public holidays, and the dry-season beach months. If your leave falls on one of them, price early and keep your exact nights flexible. If it does not, you have more room to choose a quiet week and a better room.
Which dates move prices the most?
Start with the big swing, then work down.
- Tet: the Lunar New Year, the biggest change in the calendar.
- Malaysian school holidays and long weekends: Malaysians travel in the same weeks, so flights and rooms tighten.
- Vietnamese public holidays: domestic travel fills hotels and internal flights.
- Dry-season beach months: the most popular weeks for the coast.
Tet 2027 falls on 6 February 20271. The public holiday lasts 7 days, or 9 when the first day falls Monday to Wednesday2. People usually return home to their families, and students get a one-week break3.
What do Vietnamese public holidays add?
Vietnam’s public holidays include 1 January, Tet, the Hung Kings holiday, 30 April, 1 May, 2 September and 24 November4. National Day on 2 September is a 2-day holiday, or 4 days if it falls Friday to Tuesday5.
For you, the effect is a busier domestic market. Beach towns and popular routes fill first, so a long weekend in Vietnam can feel like peak season even in a quiet month.
Does the season for the sea change the price?
Yes, and it also changes the trip. Da Nang’s wet and typhoon season runs from September to December6, and Phu Quoc’s rainy season runs roughly April to November7. Those months can lower room rates, but they can also cancel boat days.
A cheaper room in a rainy week is only a saving if your plan still works. Read the weather by month guide before you chase a low rate.
How do you test your own dates?
Use four simple steps.
- Price your trip for three nearby weeks, not one.
- Shift your departure by two days and note the change.
- Price a second region for the same dates. A different region may be calmer.
- Compare a package quote with separate bookings.
Do the same for the return flight, since each direction is priced on its own date. Our flight routes from Malaysia page lists which airports have direct service, so you know which dates to test first.
What should you do if your dates are fixed?
Accept the date and protect everything else. Book flights early, choose a base with fewer transfers, and keep one flexible day for weather. Avoid adding a second region, because a peak week multiplies the cost of every extra move.
Use the trip budget builder to see what a peak week does to the whole total, not just the fare. If you are weighing a package, the package inclusion comparator shows what the quote really covers. For the wider picture, read Costs and package value and Vietnam trip cost from Malaysia.

Common questions
Which dates are the most expensive for Vietnam?
Tet is the biggest swing, then Malaysian school holidays and long weekends, then the dry-season beach months. Vietnamese public holidays also fill hotels and domestic flights. If your leave is fixed to one of these windows, price early and keep your plan flexible on the exact nights.
Is the rainy season always cheaper?
The rooms are usually cheaper, but not the whole trip. A wet and typhoon season can cancel boat days or reroute plans, so a lower room rate may cost you a lost day. Compare the saving against how much of your trip depends on the weather.
Should I avoid Tet completely?
Not necessarily, but expect closures and heavy domestic travel. Local families return home and some shops and restaurants pause. If you want festive streets and are happy to plan around closures, it can be a memorable time. If you want a smooth, easy trip, choose another week.
How do I test whether my dates are peak?
Price your trip for three nearby weeks and shift your departure by two days either way. If the fare or room rate drops sharply, you are in a peak window. Do the same for your return flight, since each direction is priced on its own date.
Do packages hide peak pricing?
A package can smooth it, but the season still shapes the price. Ask which dates the quote assumes and whether the price changes if you move by a few days. Compare it with separate bookings using the package comparator before you pay a deposit.
