Snorkelling and Diving Islands in Vietnam
You want clear water and reef, and your group needs to know which island fits its dates.
For an easy first snorkel, start with Nha Trang’s bay. For snorkelling as one part of a resort stay, choose Phu Quoc. For quiet water and a longer journey, consider Con Dao or the Cham Islands. Your travel month decides the choice before the island’s name does.
Which island suits which traveller?
- Friends who want boat days: Nha Trang, with trips leaving from the city.
- Families who want a pool plus a snorkel stop: Phu Quoc.
- Return visitors who want quiet water: Con Dao.
- Beach-and-culture trips from Hoi An: the Cham Islands.
How do the four areas compare?
| Question | Nha Trang bay | Phu Quoc | Con Dao | Cham Islands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | City beach | Resort island | Small quiet island | Boat from Hoi An |
| Access | Direct flights to Cam Ranh, then road | Direct flights | Domestic leg first | Road, then boat |
| Wet window | Central coast rain from August or September | Roughly April to November | Southern wet season | Central coast rain from August or September |
| Feel | Organised boat trips | Mixed with resort days | Quiet, nature-led | Day trip or short stay |
How do you get to each?
Cam Ranh, the Nha Trang airport, lists AirAsia as the only Malaysian airline flying to Kuala Lumpur International1. Nha Trang is 30 km from the airport2, so plan a road transfer on arrival.
For the Cham Islands, base yourself in Hoi An, which lies about 28 km south of Da Nang6. Our Cham Islands guide explains the day trip and the overnight option. Phu Quoc and Con Dao are covered in their own pages.
When is the sea workable?
The central coast, which includes Nha Trang and the Cham Islands, has its rainy season starting around August or September and peaking in October and November4. Da Nang lists its dry season as January to August5, so boats are likelier to run then.
Phu Quoc is dry roughly December to March and rainy roughly April to November3. A year-end snorkelling holiday suits Phu Quoc, and a mid-year trip suits the central coast. Our weather by month guide lets you check your month.
What should you check before booking?
- Whether your dates fall in the island’s dry stretch.
- That every passenger gets a life jacket and a guide stays in the water.
- The minimum age for children and any medical limits.
- That the operator cancels or reschedules when the sea is rough.

Common questions
Which Vietnam island is best for a first snorkelling trip?
Nha Trang's bay is the easiest start, because boat trips leave from the city and a snorkel stop is part of most day tours. Phu Quoc suits families who want snorkelling as one activity among pool days. Con Dao and the Cham Islands suit travellers who accept longer access for quieter water.
Can I snorkel all year in Vietnam?
No. Boats run only when the sea allows, and the central coast and Phu Quoc have different rainy seasons. The central coast turns wet from around August or September, and Phu Quoc is wet roughly April to November. Pick the island that is in its dry stretch on your dates.
Do I need to know how to dive for these islands?
No. Snorkelling needs only basic swimming and a life jacket, and tour operators provide masks and fins. Diving needs a certificate or an introductory dive with an instructor. Ask the operator about children's minimum age and about medical conditions before you book.
What should I check about safety?
Check that the boat has life jackets for every passenger, that a guide is in the water, and that the operator cancels trips in rough weather. Ask about group size and whether children are supervised. Ask the same questions about any operator, and decline a trip if the answers are vague.
